Media magnate to sell important collection of American Arts & Crafts ...

Christopher ?Kip? Forbes is to sell effects from two properties in the Colorado mountains ? including a large collection of Roycroft Arts & Crafts Furniture .

In Lancashire, Christopher Forbes is known as being the vice-chairman of the Forbes publishing company, which was founded by his Scots grandfather. A highly knowledgeable art and antiques collector and writer, he also worked with his father on the restoration of the family?s historic London home, Old Battersea House; a once derelict Grade II listed mansion which became famous for its collection of artwork, antique marquetry furniture and other treasures. The house and many of its contents were put on the market in March 2011, valued at ?12m.

In the 1970s, Christopher Forbes began renovating a pair of derelict Edwardian houses on the family ranch. He was drawn to the philosophy and aesthetics of the Arts & Crafts movement, feeling the furniture to be undervalued but exactly right for his properties. As work progressed, he began collecting antique desks, Victorian dining chairs and other pieces of American Arts & Crafts furniture, with a particular fondness for items made by the Roycroft community.

On 27th October, Forbes will be selling much of his collection in what will be one of the most important sales of Arts & Crafts Furniture in recent years. Several works by Roycroft designer Dard Hunter, including an antique armchair bearing the inscription ?Sit down and rest thy weary bones? will be on sale. There are also several Morris chairs, William Morris having heavily influenced American design.

You can find similar antique chests and Victorian dining chairs in Lancashire with the antique dealers of the Ribble Valley and Preston.
