Different Surfboard Construction Techniques

1. Custom Surfboards Shaping

Custom surfboards are shaped from blanks.

Blank is actually a polyurethane (PU, hard foam) core in the rough shape of a surfboard which is split from nose to tail and a wooden strip, called a stringer, approx. 6mm wide is glued between the 2 halves.

* PRO: Custom boards is often shaped to the precise specifications of the surfer, they're light and they give a high efficiency. * CON: They may be highly-priced and they ding simply.

2. Machine shaped PU Surfboards

Machine shaped PU Surfboards are generally made exactly the same way as custom shaped surfboards. Again in place of polyurethane foam you can use styrofoam and epoxy. The distinction is the fact that the blank is shaped by a machine.

* PRO: Light, high performance, might be cheaper than custom made surfboards. * CON: Still costly, ding very easily, you can only select from a variety of predesigned surfboard shapes.

3. Surftech surfboards (Tuflite technology)

Tuflite technology is an epoxy sandwich surfboard technology.

* PRO: Lightweight, high efficiency, maximum durability. * CON: High value, some surfers also usually do not like the increased buoyancy of the epoxy surfboards.

4. Salomon S-Core surfboards

Salomon's new S-core technology was influenced by aeronautic technologies, developing boards which are FLEXIBLE, PROFILED, LIGHT, and Powerful simultaneously.

* PRO: Extra responsive, lighter, stronger and faster than a regular PU shortboard. * CON: High price.

5. Molded Surfboards (Pop outs)

Pop outs aren't shaped but they pop-out of a mold that duplicates hundreds or thousands of surfboards.

* PRO: Molded boards are low cost and sturdy, they are great for progressing from beginner surfer to intermediate surfer - these boards are lengthy, wide and thick so they are simple to paddle and catch waves quickly. * CON: Moulded boards are heavier than custom boards and are unsuitable for high efficiency surfing. If dinged (which occurs rarely) they are able to soak up water and turn out to be pretty heavy.

6. Injection Molded Surfboards

Injection Molded Surfboards look pretty related to pop-outs but are stronger and far more important - lighter. They're also far more high priced.

* PRO: Injection molded boards are lighter and give greater performance than a pop-outs, still they preserve wonderful durability and are obtainable at an incredibly great value in comparison with custom shaped surfboards. They're quick and easy to paddle. * CON: They may be far more pricey than pop outs.

7. Soft Surfboards

These are produced from a semi-rigid inner foam core blown in a mold which is covered with a soft foam exterior.

* PRO: Soft boards are exceptionally safe and frequently really durable. They inspire good confidence in rookies. Soft surfboards are huge, float effectively and also you catch waves very easily. * CON: Soft surfboards are heavier than a traditional custom surfboards and progression with them is limited, they're only appropriate for performing standard manoeuvres.

8. Bodyboards

These are made in a similar fashion to softboards but are beneath 5ft in length and are created to be ridden lying down or while crouching on one knee. They may be excellent for beginners and professionals alike and can be utilised in all sorts and sizes of waves.
