2012 U-19 Cricket World Cup: Chad Bowes optimistic about South Africa?s chances ? Cricket News Update

South Africa?s U-19 cricket captain Chad Bowes on Friday claimed that his side has the potential to win their first ever U-19 World Cup.

Speaking to the media persons at the pre-tournament press conference on Friday, the 19-year-old right-handed batsman said that they have been practicing for the marquee tournament over the past two years and was confident the hard work would pay dividends.

"This squad has been on a two-year progression plan for this event," said the Proteas skipper Chad Bowes, who has to date played only six List A matches.

"We have arrived in Australia to play good, solid cricket and we believe that we have the potential to be the first South Africa side to win the U-19 World Cup," the right-handed opening batsman added further

The South Africans have never won the esteemed tournament since its inception in 1988, though they came close in the 2008 edition in Malaysia, finishing as the runners up, after losing to Virat Kohli-led India U-19 team in the final.

The Proteas have been placed in Group D for the latest edition of the youth extravaganza. The other three teams drafted in Group D include Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Namibia. Bowes? men will open their U-19 World Cup campaign against Bangladesh at Allan Border Field,?Brisbane, on Sunday, August 12, 2012.

Pakistan?s U-19 skipper, Babar Azam, has meanwhile urged his men to get acclimatized to the unfamiliar playing conditions down under as soon as possible, if they are to win the biennial tournament.

?I think our team could be termed as favourites alongside some other teams,? said Azam at the pre-match conference, ahead of their tournament opener against Afghanistan, on Saturday. ?However, it will all depend on how quickly we adjust to the conditions in Australia,? he added further.

The ninth edition of the biennial U-19 World Cup will see a total of 16 teams, divided into four groups of four each, competing for the coveted trophy. Besides 10 Full Member of the ICC, six qualifiers ? Ireland, Scotland, Afghanistan, Nepal, Namibia and Papua New Guinea are participating in the tournament. Hosts Australia will be defending the title which they had claimed in New Zealand two years ago.
