The Not-So-Healthy Health Care in the Modern World

Most people would have a lot of superlatives to describe the health care system in the developed western world especially when compared to the underprivileged and poor developing countries. There is no doubt that they are ranked as the best when it comes to the facilities, cleanliness and hygiene in the medical arena. But after having experienced the way they operate for over a decade, my ideas have undergone a drastic reversal and more than something does not seem to be quite right.

First of all, the system is terribly expensive to sustain, not entirely due to the highly sophisticated instruments and procedures followed, but also the exorbitantly high salary that the doctors command making it a strain on the resources of the government and the exchequer. But all that would be tolerable if a patient got the right treatment and care that they want and deserve. Unfortunately that is not so and because of the shortage of doctors and hospitals there is a lengthy list and queue for patients who desperately need attention and care. Is that the price to pay for a modern health-care system? Thus, it is hardly surprising that many of these patients have no option when they resort to getting treatments done in many far-away ? third-world? countries at a fraction of the cost but with much lesser facilities.

Moreover, even when they do get the treatment done here, the outcome is far from satisfactory. It has been my personal observation that modern doctors rely heavily on tests and machines with no practical sense or knowledge. After all, a machine can always go wrong and there have been many instances of a wrong diagnosis based on a faulty reading or test. These doctors treat only the symptoms not the disease and prescribe medicines that would make the patient come back again and again, getting them hooked to the prescription drug sometimes throughout their life-time. I have very rarely seen somebody cured of the disease completely even after undergoing expensive surgeries.

This may have a lot to do with the clout of the pharmaceutical companies to promote their drugs and their links to the medical practitioners as well as the politicians. And it is especially true in the United States where the pharmaceutical giants call the shots in government health regulations and have a say in the government policies. This does not allow any alternative source of medicine to be practised or licensed.

It is very rare to come across an individual here over the age of thirty who is not into prescription drug and resorts to some form of pill-popping or other to keep themselves healthy. Given the fact that these prescription drugs are certainly not a desirable thing to ingest in the body, many of them having multiple side-effects and almost all of them building up into a long-term toxicity in the body. Having worked on cell-toxicology, I have first-hand knowledge of how much harm even micro-quantities of chemicals can cause to the cells and DNA. Of course, a person in pain would give anything to get out of the discomfort and does not have much choice, but often minor ailments can be treated in other ways. Add to this the birth-control and sleeping pills that even healthy young people are taking regularly and you certainly have a problem in hand.

When it comes to eating healthy, there are again many misconceptions. There are numerous people who advocate the cause of eating healthy organic food and are very strictly against the use of fertilizers and pesticides in their foodstuff. A lot of people also feel very strongly about genetically modified food although there has been no recorded instance of this causing any disease or illness. But at the same time, these people do not think twice when it comes to taking prescription drugs on a regular basis.

Moreover, the modern diet has a lot to account for regarding the growing incidence of cancer here in the west. Doing away with cooking and consuming processed and canned food is the norm here, but nobody thinks about the harmful preservatives and chemicals that they are also ingesting. Fast food, red meat, aerated drinks and beverages, alcohol, sweets and desserts are all part of the average individual diet. It is no wonder that obesity is on the rise here. Although a lot of people are increasingly becoming aware of what they consume and are also including yogurt, fresh fruits and vegetables in their meals these days but again the yogurt carries preservatives and the salads come with fat-rich dressings that defeat the whole purpose.

One only has to look at the diet in the far-east especially in their consumption of fresh vegetables, seafood, seaweeds, mushrooms all of which contribute a lot to the lower incidence of cancer and higher longevity there. But the saving grace and only thing that I find really commendable, is the ability of the people in the west to keep themselves active and fit. There are now a growing number of people who carry out rigorous work-outs and exercise regimes and lead active life-styles compared to the people in the more underdeveloped world; but then not everyone fits into this category. This really contributes immensely to living a healthy life and warding off debilitating diseases and it also adds years to their life-span.

Even now, it is not too late for people to realize that modernization is not always the healthiest way. We used to be organic long before pesticides and fertilizers came on the scene. People cooked their own food fresh before fast-food chains and super-markets came into business. And we used to have doctors who relied on years of experience and practical knowledge and not fancy gadgets to diagnose a disease.

How to find Auto Repair Shop in Marietta GA $25 OFF Any Service for 1st Time Clients at NAPA's Premier Service Center | AAA Approved Auto Repair Marietta GA 770-428-2520 located at 1280 Powder Springs Rd Marietta GA 30064 Is it any wonder that more and more people are searhing for a guide book to assist them to locate a reputable auto repair shop in marietta ga? So let us start our journey and answer the question: How do you locate a high-quality quality auto repair shop? For a start, you should start looking for a repair shop prior to when you need one The reason why? Because making a sensible decision is more challenging when you are up against a broken down vehicle that carries your family and gets you to work Wise choices are made after analyzing the facts Crisis situations generate an emotional environment that thwarts very clear and decisive action Phone local repair shops in your area and ask them what professional automotive repair associations they are a member of Membership in such organizations as: 'NAPA Autocare,' 'ASA,' 'Parts Plus,' 'AAA,' or 'TechNet' means a shop has met the benchmarks of membership As an example, to become AAA Approved Auto Repair Facility, a shop must undergo an extensive investigation In addition to having state-of-the-art equipment, training, qualified mechanics, as well as information systems in place, the shop will have to rank high with their customers AAA contacts about 1 hundred of the store's most up to date customers and performs a CSI (Consumer Satisfaction Index) review They question the customers such questions as: ? Was the estimate accurate compared to the actual invoice? ? Was the job done promptly? ? Did they fix it correctly the very first time? ? What sort of guarantee did they provide you with? ? Was the shop clean and attractive? ? Did they offer a ride to the workplace or somewhere you needed to be? ? Was there a comfortable, pleasurable, and clean waiting space? When the repair shop passes the exam, it would hang the "AAA Approved" shingle As you have seen, membership in associations similar to this is definitely a important qualifier when evaluating a facility Go to the shop(s) you find attractive Do you find it clean and well-kept? Or does it look like it should be condemned by the health department? Ask their clients, "Why do you do business with that facility?" Answers for instance: "They are the cheapest napa premier service center automobile repair marietta ga" "They provide a lot of special offers" "Because the owner is a friend of my father's" will not have much credibility Search for this sort of responses as: "They repair my car or truck correctly the very first time" "I can have confidence in them to complete the job at a fair price" "They welcome my inquires and also concerns and take time to respond" "There should never be any unexpected surprises whenever i come to get the vehicle" "They explain in clear English just what the problem is and what my options are patiently" Good "word of mouth" like this is a great qualifier While in the shop, try to find certifications shown on the wall auto repair service guide ga In case they have none, ask to view their credentials This will likely reveal a lot regarding the shop What shingles and certification should you search for? ? Do the mechanics have official certification from ASE, Delco, ASP, and/or manufacturers like GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan, etc? ? Are they using after market education from such leaders as NAPA/Echlin, Moog, Carquest, TRW, or Bendix? ? How about continued training coming from a technical training course or college? These kinds of shingles are proof of the fact that technicians have taken the initiative to "go past the call of duty" and keep on top of changes in their field Not only are they been trained in the most recent technology, but additionally they reveal an intense interest and pride on their work They know how to repair your car Ongoing education/certifications furthermore show that the operator of the shop cares about the quality of the work, simply because usually he is the individual that foots the bill for extended education In addition, look for membership in such organizations as the BBB (Better Business Bureau), SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), ATEA (Automotive Technology and Energy Association), and ASE (The Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) Participation with these organizations tells you that the owner of the repair facility really cares about the level of the work, and most likely operates by way of a code of ethics as required by the organization Moreover, membership in these associations generally requires that the shop subject itself to a arbitration procedure that is binding, if the need for arbitration between customer and shop occur Another point to consider in choosing a repair facility is the equipment Does the facility have state-of-the-art tools for example hand held computer code readers along with diagnosis software programs, logic probes, digital volt-ohm meters, lab scopes, and on-line laptop or computer systems like Alldata, or Mitchell-On-Demand? You shouldn't be afraid to inquire about the shop if they have this equipment These systems and tools are important to diagnose and repair your hi-tech car accurately Without them, fixing your vehicle can be a hit-and-miss proposition Another issue that arises when scouting for a repair center is the price Suppose you do know that your vehicle requires a timing belt replaced You call around to several locations and you obtain a price for the job on the phone assume you get prices of $350, $327, $297, and $197 Whoa! Why such a difference between the first 3 and the last?! Any time you run across a drastic price disparity, determine: ? Just how do the warranties compare? Is the warranty just local or nationwide? ? What brand parts are being estimated How does the workmanship and quality of the parts compare? ? Does the shop have the equipment and training to complete the job? ? Does the shop employ certified technicians? - Does the shop have positive reviews when researched on Google? Don't forget you will get what you pay for That is the fundamental law of business, as dependable as the law of gravity Be sure you know why the differences exist; only then are you ready to make a well informed final choice on car repairs Finally, I would like to comment on the significance of building relationships When customers and repair shops invest time to build relationships over a cup of coffee, watching families grow up, exchanging gifts over the holidays, or possibly sharing the loss of a mutual acquaintance trust and mutual respect grow Now when the customer phone calls with a problem, the shop responds to the needs, even though they could have a full workload for that day or week Or, possibly the client has a automobile that will require major work The shop then will become an advisor to the customer, recommending the best maintenance options in accordance with the customer's need, budget, along with the condition of the auto When the time comes to buy a car or truck, the shop will inspect the vehicle out for the customer and assess its condition Don't float around attempting to pick the 'best deal!' The 'best deal' is commonly found in competent auto repair! Deal shopping is shortsighted and ultimately just about the most costly way to do car repair business I highly encourage you to identify a top notch repair shop, where you're able to reap the rewards of a good working relationship It will be like coming in out of a driving rain where you're protected, knowing that your best interest is at heart I like doing business like that I'm sure you must as well Give us a try at NAPA's Premier Service Center | AAA Approved Auto Repair Marietta GA located at 1280 Powder Springs Rd Marietta GA 30064 Call us today: 770-428-2520 First time customers get $25 OFF any service or repair of their choice

Hate Batman? Mentally Insane? This is the place for you

By clicking on the link you have now been officially committed to Arkham Asylum. GCPD are currently on route to your house to escort you there. During your stay you may notice that one of the walls of the asylum is currently being repaired. We here at Arkham ask that you not approach it by any means. There was an incident where every so called super criminal escaped Arkham under the management of an incapable warden. That however is not the case anymore. The newest warden has been running the asylum quite well and there has been minimal violence since his arrival. Before you enter you will be evaluated and depending on this evaluation you will be designated to one of Arkham's three living areas. We hope you enjoy your stay at Arkham Asylum.

Sincerely,
Dr. Hans Klarheit
Senior Psychiatrist

P.S do not bother running, GCPD should already be at your door since you took the time to read this entire letter.

(OOC: there are also doctor and guard positions open. You can't be a character from DC comics. Hope to see you in the asylum)

Phyllis Diller: 1917-2012

NEW YORK August 20, 2012, 11:45 pm ET

NEW YORK (AP) ? Some of the most promising talent in show business was on the bill one day and night in 1955 at San Francisco's Purple Onion:

Eartha Kitt and Alice Ghostley; Paul Lynde and Robert Clary; a singer and dancer with the stage name Maya Angelou, and an eccentric former housewife, a few years older than her fellow performers, with the married name Phyllis Diller.

Angelou's family, including two small children (Clyde and Joyce), were seated in the front row. Years later, she would remember watching Diller and wondering how her guests would respond to her friend's "aura of madness."

"Black people rarely forgave whites for being ragged, unkempt and uncaring. There was a saying which explained the disapproval, 'You been white all your life. Ain't got no further along than this? What ails you?'" Angelou wrote in "Singin' and Swingin' and Getting Merry Like Christmas," a memoir published in 1976.

"When Phyllis came on stage Clyde almost fell off the chair and Joyce nearly knocked over her Shirley Temple. The comedienne, dressed outrageously and guffawing like a hiccoughing horse and a bell clapper, chose to play to the two children. They were charmed and so convulsed they gasped for breath."

The housewife soon became a star.

"AH-HHAAAAAAAAAAAA-HA-HA-HA!

Diller, the cackling template for Joan Rivers, Sarah Silverman and so many others, died Monday morning in her Los Angeles home at age 95. She faced the end, fittingly, "with a smile on her face," said longtime manager Milton Suchin.

Diller, who suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 1999, was found by her son, Perry Diller. The cause of her death has not been released.

She wasn't the first woman to crack jokes on stage; Gracie Allen had been getting laughs for decades playing dumb for George Burns. But Diller was among the first who didn't need a man around. The only guy in her act was a husband named "Fang," who was never seen and didn't exist.

"We lost a comedy legend today," Ellen DeGeneres wrote on Twitter. "Phyllis Diller was the queen of the one-liners. She was a pioneer." Tweeted Barbra Streisand: "I adored her. She was wondrous spirit who was great to me." Rivers added that she and her daughter had lunched with Diller last month.

"I'm beyond saddened by the death of Phyllis Diller. We were friends," Rivers wrote. "The only tragedy is that Phyllis Diller was the last from an era that insisted a woman had to look funny in order to be funny."

Vicki Lawrence said Diller was a pioneer in a male dominated industry.

"And yet, she was one of the nicest, kindest, funniest, sincerest women I have ever known," she said. "She had such a gentle, hysterical way of laughing at herself without ever making us feel uncomfortable about laughing with her."

The Friars Club released a statement noting that in 1988 Diller was among the first women admitted ? legitimately. A few years earlier, she had snuck in for a Sid Caesar roast, dressed as a man.

"Phyllis Diller came through a mine field of male comedians when she arrived on the comedy scene and she defused them all," Tim Conway said. "She won her place in the Hall of Comedy as the First Lady."

Born Phyllis Driver in Lima, Ohio, she married Sherwood Diller right out of school (Bluffton College) and was a housewife for several years before getting outside work. She was an advertising writer for a radio station when the Purple Onion helped launch her. She made her network TV debut as a contestant on Groucho Marx's game show, "You Bet Your Life."

Diller, asked if she was married: "Yes, I've worn a wedding ring for 18 years." Marx replied: "Really? Well, two more payments and it'll be all yours."

She credited the self-help book, "The Magic of Believing" by Claude M. Bristol, with giving her the courage to enter the business. Over the years, she would recommend it to aspiring entertainers, even buying it for them sometimes.

Diller worked steadily for decades, in nightclubs and on television. She built her stand-up act around the persona of the corner-cutting housewife ("I bury a lot of my ironing in the backyard") with bizarre looks, a wardrobe to match (by "Omar of Omaha") and the faithful "Fang."

Wrote Time magazine in 1961: "Onstage comes something that, by its own description, looks like a sackful of doorknobs. With hair dyed by Alcoa, pipe-cleaner limbs and knees just missing one another when the feet are wide apart, this is not Princess Volupine. It is Phyllis Diller, the poor man's Auntie Mame, only successful female among the New Wave comedians and one of the few women funny and tough enough to belt out a 'standup' act of one-line gags."

"I was one of those life-of-the-party types," Diller said in 1965. "You'll find them in every bridge club, at every country club. People invited me to parties only because they knew I would supply some laughs. They still do."

She didn't get into comedy until she was nearly 40, after her first husband, Sherwood Diller, prodded her for two years to give up her advertising career. Through it all, she was also a busy mother. "We had five kids at the time. I don't how he thought we'd handle that," she said in 2006.

A Chicago Tribune columnist, describing her appearance at a nightspot there in 1958, noted she was from San Francisco, hailed her as "the weirdest, wildest yet" ? and made sure to mention her five youngsters.

Her husband managed her career until the couple's 25-year marriage fell apart in the 1960s. Shortly after her divorce she married entertainer Warde Donovan, but they separated within months. Through both marriages and other relationships, "Fang" remained.

"Fang is permanent in the act, of course," she once said. "Don't confuse him with my real husbands. They're temporary."

She also appeared in movies, including "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number" and "Eight on the Lam" with Bob Hope. Diller had a cameo in "Splendor in the Grass" and was among the voices in the animated "A Bug's Life."

In 1966-67, she was the star of an ABC sitcom about a society family trying to stave off bankruptcy, "The Pruitts of Southampton." Gypsy Rose Lee played a nosy neighbor. In 1968, she was host of a short-lived variety series, "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show."

But standup comedy was her first love. Although she could be serious during interviews, sooner or later a joke would pop out, often as not followed by that outrageous "AH-HHAAAAAAAAAAAA-HA-HA-HA!"

"It's my real laugh," she once said. "It's in the family. When I was a kid my father called me the laughing hyena."

Her looks were a frequent topic, and she did everything she could to accentuate them ? negatively. She wore outrageous fright wigs and deliberately shopped for stage shoes that made her legs look as skinny as possible.

"The older I get, the funnier I get," she said in 1961. "Think what I'll save in not having my face lifted."

She felt different about plastic surgery later, though, and her face, and other body parts, underwent a remarkable transformation. Efforts to be beautiful became a mainstay of her act.

Commenting in 1995 about the repainting of the Hollywood sign, she cracked, "It took 300 gallons, almost as much as I put on every morning." She said her home "used to be haunted, but the ghosts haven't been back since the night I tried on all my wigs."

She recovered from a 1999 heart attack with the help of a pacemaker, but finally retired in 2002, saying advancing age was making it too difficult for her to spend several weeks a year on the road. "I have energy, but I don't have lasting energy," she said in 2006. "You have to know your limitations."

Diller continued to take occasional small parts in movies and TV shows ("Family Guy") and pursued painting as a serious hobby. She published her autobiography, "Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse," in 2005. The 2006 film "Goodnight, We Love You" documented her career.

When she turned 90 in July 2007, she fractured a bone in her back and was forced to cancel a planned birthday appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." But it didn't stop her from wisecracking: "I still take the pill 'cause I don't want any more grandchildren."

Her other books included "Phyllis Diller's Housekeeping Hints" and "Phyllis Diller's Marriage Manual."

"Don't get me wrong, though," she said in a 1982 interview that threatened to turn serious. "I'm a comic. I don't deal with problems when I'm working."

"I want people to laugh."

Is It Too Late to Avoid the Worst Impacts of Climate Change?

GREENHOUSE ARREST: The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today is roughly 390 parts per million, well above the 275 ppm it was before we started pumping pollution skyward during the Industrial Revolution. Climate scientists and green leaders today agree that 350 ppm would be a tolerable upper limit. Image: http://350.org/

Dear EarthTalk: I read that CO2 in our atmosphere is now more than 300 parts per million. Doesn?t this mean that we?re too late to avoid the worst impacts of climate change??Karl Bren, Richmond, Va.

Actually the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere today is roughly 390 parts per million (ppm). And that?s not good news. ?Experts agree that this level cannot be sustained for many decades without potentially catastrophic consequences,? reports the Geos Institute, an Oregon-based non-profit and consulting firm that uses science to help people predict, reduce and prepare for climate change.

While we?re unlikely to get atmospheric CO2 concentrations down as low as they were (275 ppm) before we started pumping pollution skyward during the Industrial Revolution, climate scientists and green leaders agree that 350 ppm would be a tolerable upper limit. Prior to 2007 scientists weren?t sure what emissions reduction goal to shoot for, but new evidence led researchers to reach consensus on 350 ppm if we wished to have a planet, in the words of NASA climatologist James Hansen, ?similar to the one on which civilization developed and to which life on earth is adapted.?

The non-profit 350.org, launched in 2008 by writer and activist Bill McKibben and others to raise awareness about global warming, has circled the proverbial wagons around the cause of reducing atmospheric CO2 to 350 ppm. The group has enlisted the help of thousands of student volunteers around the world to mobilize public support for reducing humanity?s carbon footprint.

McKibben, whose 1989 book The End of Nature detailed the potential effects of climate change and remains one of the most influential environmental books of all time, believes that 350 ppm is attainable. ?We?re like the patient that goes to the doctor and learns he?s overweight, or his cholesterol is too high. He doesn?t die immediately?but until he changes his lifestyle and gets back down to the safe zone, he?s at more risk for heart attack or stroke,? says McKibben. ?The planet is in its danger zone because we?ve poured too much carbon into the atmosphere, and we?re starting to see signs of real trouble: melting ice caps, rapidly spreading drought. We need to scramble back as quickly as we can to safety.?

?Scrambling back? will entail nothing short of transforming our energy infrastructure, including how we transport people and goods and power our structures. According to 350.org, it means building solar arrays instead of coal plants, planting trees instead of cutting forests, increasing energy efficiency and reducing waste. ?Getting to 350 means developing a thousand different solutions?all of which will become much easier if we have a global treaty grounded in the latest science and built around the principles of equity and justice,? the group reports. ?To get this kind of treaty, we need a movement of people who care enough about our shared global future to get involved and make their voices heard.?

The group is working to create an international grassroots movement to influence political dynamics and implement solutions that show the benefits of moving to a clean energy economy. 350 ppm, while merely a number, represents humanity?s potential capacity to solve the most pressing problem it has faced; it also represents a target for international negotiators to aim for in forging an effective global warming treaty.

New ultralight material good for space - and Earth

4 hrs.

A ?new version of aerogel ? a strange smoky-looking material that's among the world's lightest solids ? is 500 times stronger than previous versions. A thick piece could support the weight of a car, yet a thin piece easily bends. The material could be used in everything from Mars landers to refrigerators, scientists say.

Researchers at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland are developing the new?aerogel?for space missions first, but it may find a place on Earth, too. "Primarily we've been developing these materials for NASA mission applications, such as spacesuits," lead scientist Mary Ann Meador said during a news conference Aug. 19. "These would be able to land larger payloads or manned missions on Mars."

In the future, the material could go into thinner housing insulation, roomier refrigerators and TV antennas that capture broader frequency ranges, she added. Like other aerogels, it is an excellent insulator and has unique electrical properties. "This type of insulation could also be translated into use on Earth for a variety of applications," she said. [How Cellulose Could Make Fibers As Strong As Steel]

Before Meador's latest version, aerogels were made with silica, the same mineral that makes up sand and glass. Silica aerogels are strong but brittle. During the conference, which was held in Philadelphia, and which InnovationNewsDaily watched as a live video feed, Meador held up a small glass jar with broken silica aerogel in it. She had put in a whole piece of the material, but, she said, "It's such fragile material that it's broken apart."?

When used in spacecraft, silica aerogels tend to create dust that blows away, reducing its insulating ability, she said.?

The new aerogel is made from a plastic-based gel that's dried in a supercritical dryer to remove all the liquid. The manufacturing process is similar to silica-based aerogels and creates a material of similarly low density that's 85 to 95 percent air.?

The plastic-like material doesn't create dust, however, and can be made into thin, flexible sheets. Meador demonstrated a sheet during the conference, bending it nearly in half and saying, "This is a form of aerogel insulation that has never been seen before." ?

The new aerogel's thin, flexible qualities mean it can go into fabric decelerators for larger spacecraft. NASA is working on inflatable parachutes that slow spacecraft down as they land and protect the craft from the high temperatures created when plowing through an atmosphere. The new material could go into a decelerator such as the?IRVE-3?NASA tested in July, Meador said.

The new aerogel won't entirely replace silica aerogels because it isn't translucent, like the silica kind are, so it can't go into windows, Meador later wrote to InnovationNewsDaily in an email. It may also be less insulating than silica aerogels.?

As for when people may see the plastic-based aerogel in their TVs and fridges, Meador said NASA is working with the University of Akron in Ohio and a company in the Cleveland area to manufacture the aerogel in long rolls. "It's something you can visualize in the next couple to five years," she said.

After the news conference, Meador described her research to other scientists at the American Chemical Society's national meeting in Philadelphia.

Pussy Riot sentence: How did it play in Russia?

One day after three young members of Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in a penal colony for profaning a Russian Orthodox altar, the controversy over what they did and how the Russian state reacted to it shows every sign of growing.

There seems little doubt that the trial and the harsh sentences handed down to the women will worsen the image of Russia in the West, and particularly the credibility of Vladimir Putin, who has just completed the first 100 days of his third term as president. Many governments, including the United States, have condemned the sentence as disproportionate, and celebrities from Paul McCartney to Madonna have weighed in with their support for the group.

But international opinion can often have a negative impact in Russia. How the trial and its outcome have affected Russian public opinion may play a much bigger role in coming months, as the anti-Putin protest movement returns to the streets after a summer hiatus and the political season begins anew.

Public opinion has remained rather staunchly anti-Pussy Riot since the women were arrested in March. The latest poll, released last week by the independent Levada Center in Moscow, shows little change.

According to the survey, 55 percent of Russians did not have their views of the judicial system altered by the trial; 9 percent said it diminished their trust in courts while 5 percent said it increased it, and 12 percent said they have no faith in the courts to begin with. About 36 percent thought the verdict would be based on the facts of the case; 18 percent thought the verdict would be dictated "from the top." Interestingly, when asked what they thought the punk band's goal was in staging the protest, about 30 percent of respondents said it was "against the church and its role in politics"; 13 percent thought it was "against Putin" and 36 percent said they could not discern the purpose.

More worrisome, from the Kremlin's point of view, is the effect the trial has had on Russia's more educated and influential social strata. Of course the usual suspects ? opposition leaders, artists, liberal intellectuals ? have popped up to protest the treatment of the women, who were kept almost six months in pretrial detention and now face more than a year in the harsh conditions of a Russian penal colony.

But unease over a prosecution that carries such obvious political and religious overtones appears to be spreading far beyond Russia's small liberal and opposition circles.

RELATED: Putin 101: How much do you know about the Russian president? Take our quiz.

Former finance minister Alexei Kudrin, a longtime member of Putin's inner circle who was fired by then-President Dmitry Medvedev last year, wrote on his website that the verdict deals "yet another blow to the court system and citizens' trust in it.... The country's image and its attractiveness in the eyes of investors have suffered an enormous damage," he wrote.

Tina Kandelaki, a popular TV personality who has usually been reliably pro-Putin, penned a bitter blog arguing that Russian authorities are repeating past mistakes by using harsh criminal penalties to punish a minor and largely symbolic challenge.

"The Russian authorities have a nearly unparalleled knack for being unable to show properly what they do well, while letting examples of what they do badly be blown completely out of proportion ? to the extent that not only the whole of Russia, but the entire world starts paying attention," Ms. Kandelaki wrote. "Pussy Riot may have no talent whatsoever, but the Russian authorities possess the exceptional talent of making something from nothing. No one else could have managed to create Russia?s most popular band at a time when the country is terribly short of heroes. Be assured that there are Western producers falling all over themselves to help promote the group. The 'Pussy Riot behind Bars' show is broadcast all over the world now, and the world isn?t willing to miss a tiny bit of it," she added.

Putin himself, answering questions from journalists in mid-trial, suggested the women should not be punished "too harshly" ? a possible acknowledgement that the Pussy Riot prosecution was generating more damage than the Kremlin had expected. And on Saturday a leading Orthodox cleric insisted that revenge on behalf of the church was not a motive behind the trial.

"The church has been sometimes accused of not forgiving them," Tikhon Shevkunov, who heads Moscow's Sretensky Monastery, and is reputedly Putin's own spiritual counselor, told journalists. "We did forgive them from the very start. But such actions should be cut short by society and authorities."

The three women, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, were picked up outside Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior last Feb. 21, after entering a priests-only section of the church and performing a 40-second "punk prayer" that called on the Virgin Mary to expel Putin. Police initially just took down their names and let them go, probably because the church was largely empty at the time, no one was hurt, no property damaged, and the women had left voluntarily when asked to do so.

The women claim their song was a political protest targeting Orthodox Patriarch Kirill who, in the midst of an election campaign, publicly described Putin as "a miracle of God," thus allegedly violating Russia's strictly secular constitution (Article 14).

The lyrics of their song (English translation here) might well be seen as offensive on many levels, but do appear mainly directed at the moving political targets of Putin and Kirill.

Prosecutors, and in the end the court, saw things otherwise. They chose to view it as a conspiratorial "hate crime" motivated by anti-Christian loathing and directed at Russian Orthodox believers.

The verdict against the women reads in part: "The Pussy Riot singers colluded under unestablished circumstances, for the purpose of offensively violating public peace in a sign of flagrant disrespect for citizens.... The women were motivated by religious enmity and hatred, and acted provocatively and in an insulting manner inside a religious building in the presence of a large number of believers," it said.

According to court testimony, the church was almost empty at the time. But the Pussy Riot performance, filmed by a cameraperson, subsequently went viral on YouTube, and it was only after about two weeks ? and, most experts believe, as a result of political intervention ? that the women were rearrested and the stage was set for a controversy that shows every sign of enduring.

Overcoming Investment Inertia | Financial Pathways - Financial ...

Intertia (def.) The tendency of a body in motion to stay in mortion; or the power of a body at rest to remain at rest.

It is the latter part of this definition that can causes difficulty.? Let?s say your portfolio includes a large slug of company stock that you have accumulated over the years through options or restricted stock awards.? Maybe you inherited a large quantity of stock in the Fortune 500 company your dad worked at for many years.? You know that it isn?t a good idea to keep so much of your net worth tied to the fate of any single company ? but it feels comfortable and familiar. Besides, the stock has been performing nicely, ?pays a nice dividend, and all that market nastiness is behind us now, right?

Over my years as a Certified Financial Planner? I have noticed that there is a tendency for people to underestimate the danger in that which is familiar, and to perhaps overestimate the dangers in the unfamiliar.? ?Investors gain a level of comfort with a stock they have held for many years, especially if it has performed well.?? An individual company stock might seem easier to understand than a diverse portfolio comprised of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETF?s,and other assets.? And simple is better, isn?t it?? (not always)

There is nothing wrong with committing a large amount of money to a given stock if you really understand the risk involved, and if YOU WOULD MAKE THE SAME INVESTMENT CHOICE TODAY WERE THE MONEY SITTING IN CASH.

Think about that.? Let?s say you have $100,000 in AT&T stock you inherited from Aunt Elda last year.? The stock has done reasonably well, pays a nice dividend, and you have found memories of Aunt Elda, so you continue to hold the stock.? But let?s say the money were in cash today.? Would you CHOOSE to invest $100,000 entirely in a single company, even AT&T?? ?Probably not.? (and I and most other investment advisors would probably recommend against it!).

All kinds of bad things happen to good stocks.? General Motors was once a blue chip dividend investors dream.? It went bankrupt in 2008.? Pacific Gas and Electric was a steady Eddie utility company ? until it got caught up in the Enron mess.? Shareholders were wiped out.? Cable companies pretty boring??? Adephia Communications shareholders were wiped out after a major embezzlement scandal.? I was once a shareholder of Washington Mutual ? it paid a nice ?healthy? dividend of 4.5%.? I became uncomfortable with their overuse of option ARM mortgages and sold well before the products exploded and destroyed the bank. I?m willing to bet few individual WaMu stockholders even knew what an option ARM was until they read the bankruptcy notices! Sometimes fortunes can turn very quickly due to unforeseen events.? No single company is completely safe.? That is why prudent investors diversify their investments, and few people would or should consider putting their life savings into a single stock.

So considering the risks, if you wouldn?t invest all of your the money in that stock today, why would you CONTINUE to hold that investment?? Fond memories of deceased relatives aside, there is really no reason to keep an investment if you wouldn?t choose to make the exact same investment today.? After all, you do have a choice.? The only thing stopping you is inertia.

Keystone XL rival Enbridge avoids scrutiny of oil pipeline plans

ANN ARBOR, Mich. ? A major rival to the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline project is vastly boosting its U.S. pipeline system, but it's avoiding the same scrutiny that federal regulators, environmentalists and landowners are giving Keystone owner TransCanada Corp.

Enbridge Inc. is proceeding largely unencumbered with plans to spend $8.8 billion in the U.S. to transport greater volumes of petroleum to the Gulf Coast and other markets than TransCanada would with its Keystone XL pipeline project from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf Coast.

Rather than building a single new pipeline, Enbridge is replacing smaller, existing pipeline with bigger pipes, adding pumping capacity and installing new supply lines alongside existing ones.

The Calgary, Alberta, energy pipeline and storage company is forging ahead even though it has been bedeviled recently by high-profile oil spills.

TransCanada's Keystone XL plan, and its additional 830,000 barrels a day, snagged on the so-called presidential permit process, in which the State Department conducts environmental and other reviews of infrastructure projects that cross American borders.

But Enbridge, which runs the longest pipeline system in Canada and the U.S., can proceed without new presidential permits ? and the rigorous review they bring ? because the company already has permits from the initial construction years ago and because the physical work will take place in the United States.

"We can increase the capacity crossing the border by anywhere from 800,000 barrels a day to 1 million barrels a day without the need for a new presidential permit," Steve Wuori, president of the company's liquid pipeline division, said during a March 7 investor conference call.

"And I think that's very important in the politically charged environment in which we find ourselves," he said.

The task of determining the safety or wisdom of Enbridge pipeline routes falls on a patchwork of local, county and state jurisdictions through the Midwest and East, most of which lack intensive pipeline expertise.

"All these companies are going, 'How are we going to get oil from Canada to U.S. refineries without this mess? How do we avoid the political issues?'" said Brigham A. McCown, former head of the top federal pipeline regulator and attorney of international energy transportation law.

"And the answer is, find an existing pipeline that crosses the border and add capacity to that pipeline. It's no different from taking a two-lane road and turning it into a four-lane highway."

Enbridge, which earned nearly $1 billion last year, has not attracted the national attention of the Keystone XL project largely because of the piecemeal ? and still early ? nature of its upgrades. Only a few environmental groups have raised alarms thus far.

Yet some of the projects would be significant.

The company aims to build a larger line alongside its pipeline from Flanagan, Ill., to Cushing, Okla.; add a line alongside a newly acquired pipeline that runs from Cushing to the Texas Gulf Coast, a project that it's splitting with another pipeline company; and increase the capacity of a line from northwest Indiana through Michigan. Smaller projects are planned as well.

Most of the changes are expected to be finished in 2014. Once completed, they would push an additional 310,000 barrels a day through Michigan toward Ontario and take 850,000 barrels a day to the Gulf Coast.

Enbridge spokeswoman Lorraine Little said the company's upgrades aren't an attempt to avoid the scrutiny that fell upon Keystone XL; they're driven by surging oil demand in different parts of North America.

"The process is what it is," she said. "We have to abide by what's been laid out for us in order to complete a project. And so if it means going state by state and complying with their regulatory requirements, that's what we have to do."

Enbridge's recent spills raise questions about its safety record.

The company was recently fined $3.7 million for a Marshall, Mich., spill that dumped 20,082 barrels of oil in the Kalamazoo River in 2010, the biggest penalty ever from the nation's pipeline authority, the U.S. Transportation Department's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

Together with a healthy diet and consuming more of fruits, vegetables and meat and dairy foods that are low in saturated and trans fat would help you to lose weight and keep it off longer. Be sure to talk to your doctor before you would like to start any weight loss program. Here are some common sense approaches that might help you to lose weight:

1. Don?t skip your breakfast Skipping meals will only cause you to eat more in the next meal. After a long period of hunger, your stomach triggers the brain to release more chemicals that ask you to eat more (more than 2 meals combine) in the next meal.

2. Follow the BMI index According to the National Institution of Health, the definition of healthy weight is a BMI of 24 or less. Men and Women with a BMI of 25-30 are considered to be overweight. BMI is reliable for people from 19-70 years of age. Study reveals that for people over 64 years of age, the risk of dying from heart disease does not go up with a BMI between 25-27. A BMI over 28 seems to increase risk of heart disease.

3. Slowly and Surely Change your lifestyle habits slowly. Each day replace some of the saturated and trans fat foods with healthier foods.

Start Exercising gradually. Walk 10 minutes a day for a few days then 15 minutes, 30 minutes. Keep going until you work your way up to doing a supervised exercise program. Be happy if you lose 2 to 3 Lbs a week.

4. Stay Moderately active Sitting in front of the computer or television all day will increase the risk of arthritis, type II diabetes, obesity, heart diseases, and depression.

5. Shopping parking Parking your car at the far end of the parking lot will help you to burn more calories. If you calculate the calories which you burn from all the trips that you take such as mall shopping, grocery shopping, working, picking up the kid from school, you will be surprised. Each mile will burn somewhere around 125 calories.

6. Moderate intake of alcohol Moderate drinking of alcohol beverages containing no fat, no cholesterol, and very little sodium and is often associated with weight loss in women. Moderate consumption of alcohol is associated with better health and longer life. Drinking a cup of red wine for women and two cups for men daily will help increase blood circulation and decrease risk of heart attack.

7. Study shows that eating chicken soup with rice and drinking water together before meal will help to curb your appetite.

VI. How to Lose Weight with Mediterranean diet As we mentioned in the other articles, for a healthy person weight loss is simple: burn more calories than you consume. The healthiest weight is determine by height to weight ratio or Body Mass Index (BMI) and the amount of fat in your body. Unfortunately over 60% of the North American population is considered to be overweight, according to the BMI index. There must be something wrong with our diet. In faraway places such as Southern Italy and Greek, most people live longer than us because their diet contains lots of fruits and vegetables. The People in Southern Italy and Greek only eat fish and poultry a few times a week and meat a few times a month. Their diet is high in carbohydrates and only containing 8% of saturated fat. You can find some very good traditional Greek foods in you local restaurants. Here are some meals that I found very different than our diet:

1. Savor souvlaki Also known as shish kebob, it contains a large amount of vegetables and a small amount of meat. This is a meal with an average of about 300 calories and only 10 grams of fat with 1/5 of fat being saturated.

2. Pita Bread sandwich Pita bread sandwich includes hefty raw vegetable, some meat, feta cheese and cucumber sauce. It contains roughly 800 calories with 45 grams of total fat and half of that are saturated.

Unfortunately, under the influence of western diet, some of the meals that we found is no longer really Greek foods. They are high in meat and saturated fat, therefore please do not assume that all Greek restaurant are original Mediterranean diet.

VII. How to Lose Weight With Fiber Fiber is the portion of plant material that humans are not able to digest. There are two kinds of dietary fiber, soluble and insoluble. Both are important for proper bowel function. Soluble fiber dissolves in water, forming a gel in the intestines. Insoluble fiber passes through the digestive system almost intact, adding bulk to the stool and acting as a sponge to absorb water. If you have gone through all kinds of diet plans or programs such as diet pills and supplements, and despite all your efforts you can?t seem to lose weight, then you might be not eating enough fiber. Study shows that people eat as much as 60% of fiber everyday, 85% are in ideal weight. In the US they only average about 15% of fiber being consumed per person, this may be the the cause of obesity of 60% of adults.

Here are some foods that are high in fiber:

1. Dried Bean Dried bean is high in fiber and contains proteins. Fiber-rich dried beans like some other complex carbohydrates make you more likely to feel full sooner. Therefore, it is an ideal food for weight loss. Also a diet high in fiber can reduce the risk of colon cancer, as well as cholesterol levels that we know may cause heart diseases.

2. Acai Berry Acai Berry is filled with vitamins and minerals that can aid in weight loss, building muscle and increasing overall energy. Acai berry helps to increase your calorie consumption rate such as burning more calories doing the regular chores and exercises. This increased metabolism rate leads to substantial weight loss.

3. Whole Grain Products Whole grain cereals are very nutritional as they are a good source of vitamins, phytochemicals, and minerals that are needed in your day-to-day life. Whole grain products generally take a longer time to digest, and thus gives a feeling of fullness that discourages a person under a weight loss program from overeating. This is how it basically helps in weight loss.

4. Broccoli Broccoli not only has low calories, but is also inexpensive. Broccoli is one of the tastiest and healthiest vegetables, and it?s readily available year-round. Broccoli helps you lose weight because they are high in fiber and water, so you get a lot of food for a few calories.

5. Celery Celery has a high concentration of calcium that ignites your endocrine system. The hormones help to break up the accumulation of fat build up, resulting in weight loss.

6. Spinach Spinach is a dart green, negative calories vegetable. It is an excellent source of powerful disease fighting antioxidants and a good source of iron, vitamins and minerals. Spinach is loaded with fiber and one cup of steamed spinach has only 42 calories.

7. Nuts and Seeds Nuts and seeds are high in protein, nutrients and fiber. It contains lots of Omega fatty acids which means nuts and seeds can get you to feel more full and keep you from overeating in result of weight loss.

All of the above are the foods we eat daily, and contain high amounts of fiber that help to improve bowel function and transition time as well as weight loss.
