BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? A large Protestant march through the heart of Northern Ireland's capital began peacefully on Saturday amid a heavy security presence.
Thousands were participating in one of Belfast's biggest parades in years, and police deployed in force to prevent street clashes between marchers and Northern Ireland's Catholic minority.
Members of the various Protestant "loyal orders," so-called because they're loyal to Great Britain, trooped down Belfast's streets festooned with buttons, tassels, and other ceremonial gear, banging drums and playing music as walked the six-mile (nine-kilometer) route from the capital's City Hall to Stormont, the seat of Northern Ireland's parliament.
Parade-goers carried the orange collarette, a small V-shaped sash worn around the neck. Many also came in the stern-looking dark sunglasses, black bowler caps, and white gloves that have become synonymous with the marches.
At least two women chose a more relaxed uniform: Red-white-and-blue wigs and Union Jack dresses.
The loud and colorful marches date back to the 19th century and are a longstanding irritant between Northern Ireland's two main religious communities. The loyal orders see them as expressions of their culture and a testament to their faith. Many Catholics see them as aggressive and anti-Irish, and the marches can devolve into street fights, particularly when they pass through heavily Catholic area.
There were no immediate reports of any unrest, and marchers passed a potential flashpoint on the parade route ? St. Patrick's church near Belfast's city center ? without incident.
"They marched with dignity down the road," said Father Michael Sheehan, the administrator of St Patrick's. "I think a degree of respect was shown that hasn't been shown before."
Nearly every aspect of the marches ? from the parade route to the music played ? is argued over and litigated by both sides, and a specially-created Parades Commission has been created to mediate between the two. The commission can, for example, re-route a parade around a potential flashpoint or demand that sectarian songs not be sung in certain areas.
The marches are steeped in Northern Ireland's messy history, and Saturday's massive parade, which had been expected to draw up to 30,000 people, is no different. The march was due to finish at Stormont with a cultural festival held to commemorate a 1912 proclamation against plans for home rule in Ireland.
Crowd estimates were not immediately available.

Our brains are better at hearing new and approaching sounds than detecting when a sound disappears, according to a study published today funded by the Wellcome Trust. The findings could explain why parents often fail to notice the sudden quiet from the playroom that usually accompanies the onset of mischief.
Hearing plays an important role as an early warning system to rapidly direct our attention to new events. Indeed we often rely on sounds to alert us to things that are happening around us before we see them, for example somebody walking into the room while our back is turned to the door. Yet little is known about how our brains make sense of the sounds happening around us and what makes us hear certain events while completely missing others.
Researchers at the UCL Ear Institute wanted to try and understand what makes certain sounds easily detectable while others go unnoticed. They created artificial 'soundscapes' comprised of different on-going sounds and asked listeners to detect the onset or disappearance of different sound-objects within the melee.
Overall, the team found that listeners are remarkably tuned to detecting new sounds around them but are much less able to detect when a sound disappears. In busy sound environments, the participants missed more than half of the changes occurring around them and the changes that were detected involved much longer reaction times. The effects were observed even in relatively simple soundscapes and didn't seem to be affected by volume.
Dr Maria Chait, who led the research at the UCL Ear Institute, said: "On the one hand, we might expect to be more sensitive to the appearance of new events. In terms of survival, it is clearly much more important to detect the arrival of a predator than one that has just disappeared. But this reasoning doesn't apply to other situations. Imagine walking in a forest with your friend behind you and suddenly having the sound of their footsteps disappear. Our results demonstrate that there are a large number of potentially urgent events to which we are fundamentally not sensitive. We refer to this phenomenon as 'disappearance blindness'"
The study also explored how resilient listeners are to scene interruptions. In busy scenes, such as those we often face in the world around us, important scene changes frequently coincide in time with other events. The study showed that even brief interruptions, such as a short 'beep' occurring at the same time as the change, are sufficient to make listeners fail to notice larger scene changes. It is thought that this occurs because the interruption briefly captures our attention and prevents the information about the change from reaching our consciousness.
"Understanding what makes certain events pop out and grab attention while others pass by un-noticed is important not only for understanding how we perceive the world but also has important practical applications. For example, to aid the design of devices intended to help professionals such as air traffic controllers and pilots who operate in environments where the detection of change is critical," added Dr Chait.

LONDON (AP) ? Two leading officials at G4S have quit following the company's poor handling of the Olympics and Paralympics security contract, but chief executive Nick Buckles has held onto his job.
In a statement Friday, G4S said Chief Operating Officer David Taylor-Smith and Ian Horseman Sewell, managing director of global events, have resigned for the debacle which cost the company both in terms of money and reputation. In the run-up to the Olympics, which started in late July, the British Army was called in to plug gaping holes in G4S's plans.
Though G4S said the CEO has "ultimate responsibility" for the company's performance, it said a review of the debacle did not uncover "significant shortcomings" in Buckles' performance or in his handling of the Olympics contract.
The board's review said the company failed to recognize the challenges the Olympic contract would impose because of its scope, and added that ineffective monitoring and tracking of the security workforce led to problems.
Chairman John Connolly said the company will learn from its mistakes and strengthen its management and governance procedures. The company also announced a series of changes designed to prevent future problems.

RIO?DE JANEIRO???The Brazilian unit of Google, the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, said on Thursday it had obeyed a court order to remove a video attacking a candidate in Brazilian municipal elections from its YouTube service after legal appeals were exhausted.
"We are profoundly disappointed to not have the opportunity of openly debating our arguments in the electoral justice system that the videos were legitimate manifestations of the freedom of expression and should continue (to be) available in Brazil," said Fabio Coelho, director-general of Google in Brazil in an e-mailed statement.
The legal challenges underscore broader questions about Google's responsibility for content uploaded by third parties to its websites, including an anti-Islam video that sparked a wave of protests and violence in the Muslim world.
An arrest warrant was issued for Coelho earlier this week by a court in Brazil's Mato Grosso do Sul state after Google failed to obey an order demanding removal of the video attacking a mayoral candidate.
Judges in Brazil have held executives responsible for resisting the removal of online videos in violation of a stringent 1965 Electoral Code. The law bans campaign ads that "offend the dignity or decorum" of a candidate.
Google, which says it complies with local law but fights "diligently" to protect free speech, complied with the judge's order after it ran out of appeal chances, Coelho said.
On Wednesday, Coelho was questioned by Federal Police officers over the failure to remove the video and was later released.
"Despite this, we will continue with our global campaign for liberty of expression, not just because it is a prerequisite for a free society but also because more information generally means more schools, more power, more economic opportunities and more liberty for people," he said.
'Intimidation effect'
The person or persons who posted the offending videos "ironically" removed them on their own accord and closed their YouTube account, Coelho said.
"This is just one example of the intimidation effect of such an episode for freedom of speech," he added.
Earlier this month, an electoral court in Brazil's Paraiba ordered the arrest of another senior Google executive, Edmundo Luiz Pinto Balthazar, after the company refused to take down a YouTube video mocking a mayoral candidate there.
The video clip loaded by the user "Paraiba Humor" seized on a verbal slip by a candidate in a montage remarking, "What an idiot???give him an F!"
Within days, another judge overturned the order to arrest Balthazar, writing that "Google is not the intellectual author of the video, it did not post the file and for that reason it cannot be punished for its propagation."
Broader debate
Brazil also entered a broader international debate this week about an inflammatory YouTube video depicting the Prophet Mohammad as a womanizer, fool and child abuser, when a state court in Sao Paulo ordered Google to take down the video.
World leaders have decried the video, which set off a string of violent protests in the Muslim world, including attacks on U.S. embassies in Egypt, Libya and Yemen. Several Muslim leaders called for international action to outlaw acts of blasphemy.
When President Barack Obama addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, he repeated his condemnations of the video as "crude and disgusting" but defended the importance of free speech in the United States and throughout the world.
Ruling on a lawsuit by Brazil's National Islamic Union, Sao Paulo Judge Gilson Delgado Miranda gave Google 10 days to remove the video. In his decision, Miranda said he weighed freedom of expression against the need to protect against action that might incite religious discrimination.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? An international team of scientists, including geochemists from the University of California, Riverside, has uncovered new evidence linking extreme climate change, oxygen rise, and early animal evolution.
A dramatic rise in atmospheric oxygen levels has long been speculated as the trigger for early animal evolution. While the direct cause-and-effect relationships between animal and environmental evolution remain topics of intense debate, all this research has been hampered by the lack of direct evidence for an oxygen increase coincident with the appearance of the earliest animals -- until now.
In the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Nature, the research team, led by scientists at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, offers the first evidence of a direct link between trends in early animal diversity and shifts in Earth system processes.
The fossil record shows a marked increase in animal and algae fossils roughly 635 million years ago. An analysis of organic-rich rocks from South China points to a sudden spike in oceanic oxygen levels at this time -- in the wake of severe glaciation. The new evidence pre-dates previous estimates of a life-sustaining oxygenation event by more than 50 million years.
"This work provides the first real evidence for a long speculated change in oxygen levels in the aftermath of the most severe climatic event in Earth's history -- one of the so-called 'Snowball Earth' glaciations," said Timothy Lyons, a professor of biogeochemistry at UC Riverside.
The research team analyzed concentrations of trace metals and sulfur isotopes, which are tracers of early oxygen levels, in mudstone collected from the Doushantuo Formation in South China. The team found spikes in concentrations of the trace metals, denoting higher oxygen levels in seawater on a global scale.
"We found levels of molybdenum and vanadium in the Doushantuo Formation mudstones that necessitate that the global ocean was well ventilated. This well-oxygenated ocean was the environmental backdrop for early animal diversification," said Noah Planavsky, a former UCR graduate student in Lyons's lab now at CalTech.
The high element concentrations found in the South China rocks are comparable to modern ocean sediments and point to a substantial oxygen increase in the ocean-atmosphere system around 635 million years ago. According to the researchers, the oxygen rise is likely due to increased organic carbon burial, a result of more nutrient availability following the extreme cold climate of the 'Snowball Earth' glaciation when ice shrouded much of Earth's surface.
Lyons and Planavsky argued in research published earlier in the journal Nature that a nutrient surplus associated with the extensive glaciations may have initiated intense carbon burial and oxygenation. Burial of organic carbon -- from photosynthetic organisms -- in ocean sediments would result in the release of vast amounts of oxygen into the ocean-atmosphere system.
"We are delighted that the new metal data from the South China shale seem to be confirming these hypothesized events," Lyons said.
The joint research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the NASA Exobiology Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Besides Lyons and Planavsky, the research team includes Swapan K. Sahoo (first author of the research paper) and Ganqing Jiang (principal investigator of the study) of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Brian Kendall and Ariel D. Anbar of Arizona State University; Xinqiang Wang and Xiaoying Shi of the China University of Geosciences (Beijing); and UCR alumnus Clint Scott of United States Geological Survey.

Everyone's favorite messaging service, BBM has broke from cover in its new BlackBerry 10 digs at BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012. The software is sporting a redesigned UI, which places the focus on your contacts' photos instead of the regular ol' list of names. Speech bubbles that we've all become familiar with are still here and emoticons get cozy as well. Another new feature is the predictive keyboard that's capable of detecting the language that you're typing in and offers the appropriate suggestions that you may need -- even if you're switching back and forth.

About 46% of marriages are now?in separation and two thirds of remarriages?have children from previous marriages. So it is probable that if you are single and looking, your?future partner will be separated with one or more children. If this is the case, then there are many possible home preparations for the children. For example, they exist in with one parent but the other parent may have?visitation every other?weekend,?on Sundays, or only during school holidays, only for special occasions such as family birthdays or perhaps exist in at exchange parental homes for a few?days each week. No matter what the agreement is, you will have get in touch with with the children?to become? part of their life. It is not simple and you need to consider these issues. Here are five of them:
1. I love my sweetheart but not the children!
Your love for your partner is supreme and must be strong. Love does not mechanically turn out to be switched on for the step-children, so do not feel neglected. It?s not a case of ?Love me, love my kids? Quietly tell your partner and show?your admiration for?the children. Your love and interest in them will develop, but it could take time.
2. The children won?t talk to me!
Often children are very careful about?warming up to?their parent?s new partner. When expressing their own nervousness, they may pay no attention to you, be difficult or envious at the time you spend together. Only when they know for certain that you have openly dedicated to each other, will they start to?accept you and gradually?and let you in?on their lives. Not only have they seen a parent move out but they may have also before trusted and liked their parent?s temporary partners, only to be let down and experience more defeat when that?relationship ended. It is their way of not receiving hurt.
3. Am I?supposed to discipline?
This warrants?a careful?conversation with your partner.?The final call?is set by the parent, although you will need to?rely?on?your partner and?be seen to support your partner. This will also help your step-child to appreciate limits and feel safe and trusted in your presence. There will be?times when you differ with your partners way of?discipline and rules. In these moments count gradually to ten,?respect and remember that it will be your step-child who sees you respect the rules,?and will show this with their performance. You will find out that it is the small every day belongings which?get to you the?most such as not picking up damp towels, poor table etiquette or not stacking the dishwasher correctly.
4. Do I have to see the ex?
No matter your thoughts, try to stay distinguished and tranquil. There may be?a lot of?feelings from everybody, counting ex-spouses, grandparents, uncles and aunts who are expressing their defeat, anger or sense of breakdown with the new home preparations. Family gatherings can be?odd at best?but keep?your cool?and give it?some?time, offer food or?tableware, choose presents or cards with your partner. You may be lucky and everybody is pleased that you are now on the sight, so take pleasure in it and count it as an unforeseen enrichment.
5. Is step-parenting forever?
Like parenting, step-parenting is everlastingly. You may think that it is over once your step-child reaches young maturity and in one sense the hands ? on stress do turn out to be less. In its place your position as a parent figure comes to the front. With any luck after existence of step-parenting, enough faith and self-assurance will have built up so that your step-child will ask for your recommendation?in additional studies, career, job opportunities, option of cars. Down the?road you may also turn out to be a step-grandparent but by then you will be knowledgeable enough to take this on with no problems.
There are often no gratitude?s for the additional challenges, but step-children do turn out to be part of your life and comprehensive family. Flattering a step-parent is not simple, but with thought of a variety of issues such as the above, your odds of a winning life?with a ready made family, are greater than before.

When I first became pregnant some 9 years ago I had no idea that midwives were an option, let alone that midwifery care was covered by my insurance. I knew midwives existed in the world because my family is English and Australian and midwives are often the primary support for expecting and laboring mothers in those countries. Somehow I knew I was pro-midwife. In Women?s Studies classes I learned that during the Darker Ages midwives had been burned at the stake for their expertise, and that things got worse for mothers and babies when men (?barber surgeons?) took over. But I didn?t connect these stories to the reality that I could literally hire a midwife in NYC who would take care of all my prenatal visits, labor and birth and beyond. This is precisely what I did when I became pregnant for the second time in 2007. My midwife was awesome.
Midwives have gained popularity in the US in recent years. According to a recent New York Times style piece, hiring a midwife is the thing to do for fashionable New Yorkers. But still, midwifery care is far from the norm in America. Lots of newly expectant parents are understandably confused about what midwives do exactly.
A new campaign from the American College of Nurse Midwives may clear up some of this confusion. A part of the campaign? ?Our Moment of Truth??is titled ?Midwifery Myths Set Straight.? Here?s a look:
?The profession of midwifery has evolved with today?s modern health care system. But there are many myths about midwives in the United States based on centuries-old images or simple misunderstandings. You might be surprised to learn the truth about some of these common midwifery myths.?
TRUE OR FALSE?
Midwives have no formal education.
FALSE. Most midwives in the United States have a master?s degree and are required to pass a national certification exam. There are many different types of midwives, each holding different certifications based on their education and/or experience. Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) attend approximately 93% of all midwife-attended births in the United States, and as of 2010 they are required to have a master?s degree in order to practice midwifery.
Midwives and physicians work together.
TRUE. CNMs and CMs work with all members of the health care team, including physicians. Midwifery care fits well with the services provided by obstetrician/gynecologists (OB/GYNs), who are experts in high risk, medical complications and surgery. By working with OB/GYNs, midwives can ensure that a specialist is? available if a high-risk condition should arise. Likewise, many OB/GYN practices work with midwives who specialize in care for women through normal, healthy life events. In this way, all women can receive the right care for their individual health care needs.
Midwives only focus on pregnancy and birth.
FALSE. Midwives have expert knowledge and skill in caring for women through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. But they also do much more. CNMs and CMs provide health care services to women in all stages of life, from the teenage years through menopause, including general health check-ups, screenings and vaccinations; pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care; well woman gynecologic care; treatment of sexually transmitted infections; and prescribing medications, including all forms of pain control medications and birth control.
Midwives can prescribe medications and order tests.
TRUE. CNMs and CMs are licensed to prescribe a full range of substances, medications, and treatments, including pain control medications and birth control. They can also order needed medical tests within their scope of practice and consistent with state laws and practice guidelines.
Midwives cannot care for me if I have a chronic health condition or my pregnancy is considered high-risk.
FALSE. Midwives are able to provide different levels of care depending on a woman?s individual health needs. If you have a chronic health condition, a midwife still may be able to provide some or all of your direct care services. In other cases, a midwife may play a more of a supportive role and help you work with other health care providers to address your personal health care challenges. In a high-risk pregnancy, a midwife can help you access resources to support your goals for childbirth, provide emotional support during challenging times, or work alongside specialists who are experts in your high-risk condition to ensure safe, healthy outcomes.
Midwives offer pain relief to women during labor.
TRUE. Midwives are leading experts in how to cope with labor pain. As a partner with you in your health care, your midwife will explain pain relief options and help you develop a birth plan that best fits your personal needs and desires. Whether you wish to use methods such as relaxation techniques or movement during labor or try IV, epidural, or other medications, your midwife will work with you to help meet your desired approach to birth. At the same time, your midwife will provide you with information and resources about the different options and choices available if any changes to your birth plan become necessary or if you change your mind.
Midwives only attend births at home.
FALSE. Midwives practice in many different settings, including hospitals, medical offices, free-standing birth centers, clinics, and/or private settings (such as your home). In fact, because many women who choose a midwife for their care wish to deliver their babies in a hospital, many hospitals in the United States offer an in-house midwifery service. And because midwives are dedicated to one-on-one care, many practice in more than one setting to help ensure that women have access to the range of services they need or desire and to allow for specific health considerations. In 2010, about 90% of births attended by midwives in the United States were in hospitals.
There?s much more to learn on the handy FAQ page at Midwife.org. You can also use this website to start a search for a midwife in your area.

Smile, be nice and help out doesn?t seem like it?s that hard to do in customer faced roles, right? It?s really the basics of customer service ? or so you?d think.
Don?t you love it when you walk into a shop and the shop assistant is behind the counter on the phone planning her night out or eating a sandwich rather than talking to customers? Doesn?t ?assistant? mean that she could be ?assisting? her customers or at least acknowledging them?
And then, you come across people who are absolutely amazing at looking after their customers and it becomes so easy to spend money. A lot of shops could be doing so much better if they trained their staff better or employed more suitable candidates.
Just last week, my husband flew back from Zurich to Sydney (while I stayed another week to enjoy European summer, someone?s gotta do it). Checking in at Qatar Airways, the lady asked if he had the credit card he used to purchase the flights. Unfortunately that card was back in Sydney, so the lady said: ?well, then you need to buy a new flight!?. Excuse me? Are you for real? They?ve already taken the money out of the account and now decide that you need to buy a new flight only because we didn?t have that same credit card on us? Wow, that?s a whole new customer experience.
It?s so important for a business to train their team members on providing the best customer service possible. Especially in a world where people are talking on social media, instantly spreading the word about a company?s good or bad service. Having people talk about your company positively in public is extremely powerful and an effective marketing tool.
In our own business, we put a lot of emphasis on providing the best client service and one of our team members role is solely dedicated to looking after clients and prospects ? making sure they are happy. It really isn?t that hard.
Yes, sometimes you?ll have painful clients and in this case I don?t believe businesses need to bend over backwards ? but rather help them find another service provider, in the nicest possible way.
The good news is that excellent customer service will help a business stand out from the rest and attract loyal customers.
Luckily my husband was able to call our bank in Australia, thanks to their wonderful 24-hour customer service and get the credit card number faxed through. He got on the flight with five minutes to spare ? phew!
Do you have any customer service examples, good or bad you?d like to share below? We would love to hear from you.

As Romney's poll numbers dip and he tries to regain traction, candidates in California seem to be taking a wait-and-see attitude as to whether to distance themselves from Romney, as numerous Senate and House candidates around the country already have done.
Spokesmen for some -- including Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Modesto, and former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado, who's challenging Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara -- say what Romney says has little effect here. But other campaigns are less willing to discuss Romney's troubles.
Eleven California House districts are considered competitive, according to the closely watched Cook Political Report. That makes the Golden State a make-or-break battleground for the Democrats' long-shot quest to gain 25 House seats and perhaps reinstall San Francisco's Nancy Pelosi as House speaker.
This week a video surfaced of a May Romney fundraiser in Florida at which he badmouthed "47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what" because they're dependent upon government and pay no income tax.
Colin Hunter, a campaign spokesman for Republican Ricky Gill of Lodi, who's taking on Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton, in the 9th Congressional District, said he would "respectfully decline to comment" on Romney's remarks. Alee
Lockman, campaign manager for Republican Kim Vann -- who's challenging Rep. John Garamendi, D-Fairfield -- said only that "Kim remains focused on talking with 3rd District voters and sharing her positive message of working toward common-sense solutions to the challenges facing our nation."Representatives of Rep. Dan Lungren's re-election campaign didn't return emails and calls Thursday and Friday seeking comment.
Romney arrived in the Bay Area on Friday evening for a Hillsborough fundraiser to which no reporters were admitted, after 10 rocky days. Even before the "47 percent" video surfaced, his Sept. 12 criticism of President Barack Obama's handling of attacks that killed Bay Area native Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, had polled poorly. Then last weekend brought a wave of stories quoting sources within the Romney campaigns describing disarray and pointing fingers.
Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, said Republicans definitely are nervous that if Obama wins big, House Democrats could exceed expectations and perhaps even retake the chamber. That's still a very remote possibility, he said, but "it is certainly true that as Obama's vote total goes up, the potential for significant coat tail increases."
But Gary Jacobson, a congressional elections expert at UC San Diego, said Romney's missteps might hurt California GOP candidates a little less.
"Insofar as they get tied to his message, then there might be some problem," he said. "But the advantage for California Republicans is that there's no Romney campaign here whatsoever. The state has been conceded to Obama, as well it should be. So that probably limits the kind of 'guilt by association' that Republicans might face when Romney makes comments that seem to be unpopular and not very astute.
"It never helps to have the top of your ticket floundering around. ... But I don't think it's going to be decisive in any of these races" in California, Jacobson said.
New polls might be starting to show the fallout for the Romney stumbles.
A Purple Insights poll released Friday shows Obama leading Romney 49 percent to 44 percent across a dozen battleground states, compared with a one-point Romney lead last month.
Sabato, however, noted that if many Californians decide not to go to the polls because the state is a lock for Obama, the depressed voter turnout could actually help Republicans.
Brook Hougesen, spokeswoman for a Republican super PAC called the Congressional Leadership Fund, said she hasn't seen Romney become a liability for any California House candidate, "though the same cannot be said for President Obama."
"Ultimately, these campaigns are going to be about the various candidates' economic records," she said. "Unfortunately for Democrats running in California, voters may personally like President Obama, but in the competitive California districts they fundamentally disapprove of his economic policies -- the exact same ones vulnerable incumbent Democrats ushered in."
But Andy Stone, spokesman for the Democrat-affiliated House Majority PAC and a former McNerney aide, predicted Romney's gaffes "will have a huge effect" on California's GOP congressional contenders.
"Why else would Republicans in swing districts nationwide be sprinting from Mitt Romney and be doing acrobatics to avoid being associated with him?" he said. "The bottom line is that Mitt Romney perfectly exemplifies a party that -- whether it's ending Medicare, cutting Pell Grants or gutting infrastructure funding all to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest -- has made it clear they're not on the side of the middle class. GOP congressional candidates won't be able to run from that."
Some say they don't have to.
"A large majority of voters know that California is irrelevant in the presidential race and the place they can make the biggest impact with their vote is at the congressional level," said Dave Gilliard, who's managing Denham's re-election campaign against Democratic challenger Jose Hernandez.
"No matter who wins the presidency, 10th District voters want a representative who will be independent and not afraid to take on the big spenders and status quo and, most important, someone who understands the (Central) Valley's economy and is committed to turning things around," he said.
Maldonado spokesman Kurt Bardella said House campaigns were more likely to be swayed by bigger races in 2010, when California had costly, hard-fought contests for governor and U.S. Senate.
"This time there is none of that, there is no top-of-the-ticket race in California," he said, noting that Obama is a lock and most voters can't even name U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein's GOP challenger. (It's Elizabeth Emken of Danville.)
"It's almost like an off-year election for us instead of us being on a presidential-year trajectory," Bardella said. "Because the president is going to win here, the only thing that gets you out to the polls is how passionate you are about the next race down on the ballot."
But asked about Maldonado opinion on Romney's remarks, Bardella replied that Maldonado is too wrapped up in his own race and the district's issues to pay any mind to what presidential candidates say.

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) ? There's no relief in sight for firefighters battling several large wildfires in Washington state, and a lightning storm forecast to sweep through the region Saturday could ignite even more blazes and bring little to no rain.
For weeks, thousands of firefighters have been working to steer the fires away from scattered hillside homes and entire communities, awaiting the fall rains or mountain snow that typically end the wildfire season. The fires are burning on 143 square miles of parched forest, brush and grass.
Thick smoke has blanketed the immediate area of the fires and beyond, forcing one school district to cancel classes entirely. State health officials sent more than 20,000 respirator masks to the region in anticipation of possible shortages.
And still, the wait continues.
The fires burning in central Washington were expected to kick up a little bit Friday with high temperatures and unstable conditions, though the smoke could clear a little bit, National Weather Service meteorologist Steven Van Horn said.
But Saturday's storm could bring lightning to western Washington and up and down the Cascade Range, with the hardest hit area likely to be the central region, he said.
The storm is likely to bring very little precipitation, he said. Significant rainfall or snow that might douse the fires is not expected any time soon.
That's unwelcome news for thousands of firefighters already battling several large wildfires there ? and dozens of small ones ? that were sparked by a lightning storm earlier this month.
So far, firefighters have largely been able to protect homes and other structures. Residents of 161 homes north of Ellensburg, about 100 miles southeast of Seattle, have been urged to leave because of fires.
Several fires there have already burned together to create one blaze covering nearly 47 square miles, and the fire was threatening to merge with another large blaze southwest of Wenatchee. U.S. Highway 97 was closed over Blewett Pass as firefighters worked to burn dry fuel and take down dead trees.
Some forest land in the fire's path hasn't burned in decades, and trees have been killed or removed of their foliage by outbreaks of mountain pine beetle and Western spruce budworm, fire spokeswoman Connie Mehmel said.
"We're not trying to get them to burn together, but it just isn't realistic" to stop them, she said. "In some ways, we can more easily manage these fires if they burn together with just one perimeter."
In the meantime, crews were just working to secure lines in case the coming storm brings high winds, she said.
"And if we get new starts, we'll have to deal with them as they arrive," Mehmel said.
Smoke from the fires is pouring across Eastern Washington, obscuring the air 200 miles away in Spokane. State officials have warned of hazardous air quality in Ellensburg and Wenatchee from the thick smoke. They are advising residents to stay indoors, limit physical activity and keep doors and windows closed.
One school district canceled classes for the week because of the smoke, and several high schools postponed or relocated outdoor sporting events. Central Washington University also moved its Saturday football game against Azusa Pacific from Ellensburg to the Seattle suburb of Bothell.
In Yakima, organizers canceled the annual Sunfair Parade to open the Central Washington State Fair due to the poor air quality.

ATLANTA (AP) ? Jim Furyk, the only American on the Ryder Cup team without a win this year, put himself in position Friday to join them.
Furyk made seven birdies through 10 holes at East Lake ? including seven 3s to start the round ? until he missed a few greens on the back nine that slowed his momentum. He wound up with a 6-under 64, giving him a one-shot lead over Justin Rose going into the weekend at the Tour Championship.
As for anyone questioning whether Furyk should have been a pick for the Ryder Cup?
He was more bothered by missing a 5-foot par putt on the 18th hole than what anyone thinks about his game or being in the Ryder Cup for the eighth straight time. With 16 wins, including a U.S. Open, and having qualified for every U.S. team since 1997, Furyk stopped believing he had to prove himself a long time ago.
"Look at the way I play golf ? the way I swing the golf club and grip the putter," he said. "Look at the way I go about my business. I don't hit the ball very far. I'm short. If I really cared what the critics thought the last 19 years, I really wouldn't be here. ... My teammates know that I'm going to give 110 percent. They know I have a lot of heart. I have a lot of grit, and that's what I'm going to do.
"But I've never felt like I have to justify myself."
All he cares about is winning the Tour Championship, with an outside shot at the FedEx Cup title and its $10 million bonus. Furyk was at 7-under 133 on a course where he won just two years ago.
Rose, who shared the 18-hole lead with Tiger Woods, made four birdies on the back nine and holed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 18th for a 68.
Woods went the other direction.
The lone bright spot was a bunker shot that was among the best he has ever hit. With a quarter of the ball below the surface of the sand from a fairway bunker on the third hole, he caught a 9-iron so perfectly that it came out low and ran across the green to 6 feet for birdie.
The rest of the day was forgettable ? a muffed pitch from a bad lie on No. 8 that led to double bogey, and a series of bad swings that put him in bad positions on the back nine and led to four bogeys. He had to scramble for par on the 18th for a 73, his worst score at East Lake in 14 years, dating to a 76 in the second round in 1998.
"I didn't play very good today. Didn't hit it very good, and definitely didn't putt well," Woods said. "So it was a struggle all day."
Woods was six shots behind.
Bo Van Pelt made three bogeys on the last four holes and still had a 68 that put him two shots behind at 135, along with Masters champion Bubba Watson (66). Dustin Johnson, who had to summon his college teammate from Coastal Carolina to caddie for him when his regular had back problems, had a 67 and was another shot back, along with Georgia Tech alum Matt Kuchar (69).
The caddie was Cameron Hooper, perhaps the only caddie to ever wear topsiders and no socks. He wasn't expecting to do anything but watch. Johnson played with Garcia, who uses a CBS Sports spotter for his caddie.
Rory McIlroy, who is leading the FedEx Cup, had a 68 and was only four shots behind. He still has the best shot at the $10 million bonus, though he remains far more interested in winning his third straight tournament, and fourth in his last five starts. McIlroy was fortunate not to tumble down the leaderboard, but he scrambled for par on three of five holes at the start of his round, and made up plenty of ground with a 40-foot eagle putt on the 15th.
"I just have to try to think of my standing in this golf tournament, not really think about anything else," he said.
Furyk hasn't won since he turned his cap around in the rain, saved par from a bunker and won the Tour Championship in 2010, along with the FedEx Cup.
He lost in a four-man playoff at Innisbrook. He was tied for the lead at the U.S. Open with three holes to play ? two of them par 5s ? until he hooked his tee shot into the trees and made bogey on the 16th. And he led at Firestone from the opening round until chopping up the final hole for a double bogey to lose by one.
"I think that my personality is that I'm 75 percent mad that I haven't closed the door," he said. "I have to be reminded, whether it's my teacher or my caddie or my wife or whoever it may be, that 'You're playing well. Be patient. Let it happen.' Instead of the silver lining in the cloud, I'm definitely tougher on myself than anyone else."
Furyk was close to perfect on the front nine at East Lake.
He spent close to an hour on the practice range Thursday afternoon, mostly hitting his driver, and it paid off in the second round. East Lake can only be attacked from the fairway, and only one of Furyk's six birdie putts on the front nine was over 5 feet ? that as a 15-footer on his opening hole.
"I just didn't hit enough fairways yesterday," Furyk said. "I felt like my iron play was sharp, but I was playing from the rough too much and scrambling a couple times too many. So I wanted to get the ball in play. I did a good job of that, and I set myself up for a lot better iron shots, and my iron game was as good as it's been all year on the front nine. ... So you've got to feel good about it."
He'll feel even better if he can go to Medinah next week with his 17th career win, though that don't determine how he plays.
And if anyone is questioning Furyk being a captain's pick, he wasn't sure who it was. The eight players who qualified all weighed in with their choices. So did the assistant captains, along with U.S. captain Davis Love III. For them, taking Furyk didn't seem to be a problem.
Woods certainly didn't feel that it was.
"It's not that controversial to us as players," Woods said. "But to some it might be who are outside the team. ... He's been so solid and so rock steady. He's a great team player, and he's playing well. As I said, he's two swings away from being in the top five in points."
Those two swings ? a tee shot at Olympic, a 7-iron at Firestone ? actually would have put Furyk at No. 1 on the Ryder Cup points list. Either way, he'll be at Medinah. For now, his focus is on two more days at East Lake.

Many of us who are fighting advanced prostate cancer struggle with the perplexing side effects of non-steroidal antiandrogens (like Casodex). These side effects include gynecomastia (breast enlargement) and breast pain. In most cases as we use these drugs our breasts grow, become very sensitive and/or painful. In my case my breasts have grown to the point that my son has asked me to put on my shirt while I am at the beach. We all have seen that cartoon where an older couple (man and women) stand looking at each other, both with similar, substantial breasts. The man says to the women, aren?t you embarrassed, put on your bra!
To stop these male breast problems many doctors offer a ?shot? of radiation to the breasts. Despite the radiologist?s claims that this is a safe procedure, I remain concerned about the possible unexpected side effects, especially secondary cancers. Maybe this concern comes from more personal over sensitivity to developing additional cancers; I am already a survivor of four primary cancers.
Additionally, radiation will not reverse breast growth or sensitivity, once you have them they are yours for life.
Some men become so upset about their breast grow they elect to have breast reduction surgery!
An alternative treatment to radiation and surgery seems to be in the wings. Tamoxifen is now being used as a potential management option as an alternative to surgery or radiotherapy.
There was recently a systematic review designed to assess the benefits and harms of tamoxifen, in comparison to these other treatment options. The review included an evaluation of tamoxifen both as a prophylaxis (preventive) and as a treatment of already existing breast events in men with advanced prostate cancer.
The review searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, reference lists, the abstracts of three major conferences and three trial registers to identify ongoing randomized controlled trials. Two authors independently screened the identified articles, assessed their qualityand relevance and then extracted data. The protocol was prospectively registered (CRD42011001320; http://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO).
For the purpose of this analysis the researchers identified four separate studies that they then evaluated. They found that:
Tamoxifen significantly reduced the risk of suffering from gynecomastia (RR 0.10, 95% CI 0.05-0.22) or breast pain (RR 0.06, 95% CI 0.02-0.17) at 6 months compared to untreated controls.
Tamoxifen also showed a significant benefit for the prevention of gynecomastia (RR 0.22, 95%CI 0.08-0.58) and breast pain (RR 0.25, 95% CI 0.10-0.64) when compared to anastrozole after a median of 12 months.
One study showed a significant benefit of tamoxifen for the prevention of gynecomastia (RR 0.24, 95%CI 0.09-0.65) and breast pain (RR 0.20, 95% CI 0.06-0.65) when compared with radiotherapy at 6 months. Radiotherapy increased the risk of suffering from nipple erythema and skin irritation, but there were no significant differences for any other adverse events (all p>0.05).
The researchers concluded that tamoxifen has efficacy for the prevention and treatment of breast events brought about by taking non-steroidal antiandrogens. None of these studies evaluated the impact of tamoxifen therapy on long-term adverse events, disease progression and overall survival.
In conclusion we need additional large, well-designed trials, including long-term follow-ups, to clarify these questions as well as the optimal dose needed to do the job safely.
