Jermell , who teaches at Roger Williams Day Care Center in Providence, has been pursuing an associate?s degree in early childhood education at the Community College of Rhode Island for several years. For the past two semesters she has participated in T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood RI?, which covers 80 percent of her tuition and 90 percent of her book costs.
To be eligible for the CCRI chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a student must have a grade point average of at least 3.75 with a minimum of 24 credits and no more than 60 earned credits. Jermell, who has been taking four courses a semester while working full time, expects to complete her degree next year.
?My family and boyfriend have really supported me in this,? Jermell says. ?They arranged their schedules so that they could take care of my children when I?m at class.?
Jermell is also grateful to T.E.A.C.H. ? not just for the scholarship money but for the guidance she has received from Maura Pearce, who coordinates the project at Ready to Learn Providence.
R2LP takes special pride in Jermell?s accomplishments. Since 2008 she has participated in two of our largest programs, the Early Childhood Educator Professional Development program and our current Early Reading First program.
?When I meet with Jermell, she is always thinking how she can improve her work in the classroom,? says Desiree Manley, the R2LP early literacy coach assigned to Roger Williams. ?She doesn?t waste a moment in her interactions with kids. She?s always thinking of ways to improve her methods of assessing their growth and helping them learn.?
Jermell will be honored at an Induction Ceremony of Phi Theta Kappa at CCRI on March 2.
