Facebook photos lead to child abuse arrests in Arizona (Reuters)

PHOENIX (Reuters) ? Two Arizona parents were arrested by sheriff's deputies after apparently posting pictures on Facebook that showed their children, an infant and a toddler, bound with duct tape, authorities said on Thursday.

Coconino County deputies arrested Frankie Almuina, 20, and Kayla Almuina, 19, on suspicion of two counts of child abuse on Wednesday at their northern Arizona home after being alerted to the photos by an anonymous tip.

The children, a 2-year-old toddler and a 10-month-old infant, were seen online bound with duct tape on their wrists and ankles with their mouths taped shut, Commander Rex Gilliland told Reuters. One of the children was shown hanging upside down on an exercise machine.

The parents told investigators that the photos, posted on the mother's Facebook account, were a joke and that the children were not harmed, Gilliland said.

"It's clear in our minds that these children were placed in a very extreme situation," Gilliland said. "By the look on their faces, they were in sheer terror. I don't know how this could have been a joke."

Authorities were called to the scene after a person who likely knew the couple saw the postings and called the Arizona Child Abuse Hotline, Gilliland said. The caller knew the names of the parents and where they lived.

He said investigators seized about a dozen similar photos, some that were not posted online, from the home north of Williams, Arizona, about 175 miles north of Phoenix.

The couple were being held in a county jail as of late on Thursday. The children have been turned over to another family member, Gilliland said.

Cuban Jewish leaders meet with jailed American (AP)

HAVANA ? A leader of Cuba's small Jewish community who visited jailed American contractor Alan Gross and even released pictures of them celebrating the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah together said Wednesday that he was in good spirits and fine health. But her account was quickly disputed by the man's wife, who said he was increasingly frail and despondent.

Adela Dworin said that she and another Jewish leader spent nearly two hours Monday with Gross at the military hospital where he is being held. They lit candles, ate potato pancakes and passed around chocolate coins to celebrate Hanukkah.

Photographs taken during the meeting show a thin Gross wearing a light-blue guayabera shirt standing between Dworin and another Cuban Jewish leader, David Prinstein. Gross has a gray beard. They are believed to be the first photos released of Gross inside the military hospital.

"His health is very good," Dworin told The Associated Press ahead of the photos' release. "He has gained some weight. He's not fat, but he's not so thin anymore."

But that account was questioned by Gross's wife, Judy, who revealed that she had traveled to Cuba to visit her husband a few weeks ago, and said she speaks to him regularly on the phone.

"He is deteriorating more and more every day," she wrote in a statement. "He told me he is feeling very hopeless ... I truly do not know how much longer he can take this ordeal."

Judy Gross said her 62-year-old husband had recently cried for the first time while they spoke on the phone together, and said if he appeared cheerful in front of Dworin it was only to "put on a brave face."

"We continue to beg the Cuban authorities to let Alan come home to us," she wrote, adding that one look at the photos released by Dworin show a man who is weak and frail compared to the way he looked before his arrest.

Gross, who was portly, reportedly had lost 100 pounds (45 kilos) since he was arrested in December 2009.

Dworin said he told her he now weighs 161 pounds and walks five miles a day within the military hospital he is being held. She said he looked considerably better than on a previous visit she made to see him, and even made a muscle to show her his returning strength.

Dworin said Gross even told her he would like to return to Cuba for a visit after his release, noting he has seen the entire island except for the western province of Pinar del Rio.

Gross was working on a USAID-funded democracy-building program when he was arrested. His supporters say he was only trying to help the island's small Jewish community improve its Internet connection. Cuba says the USAID programs are aimed at bringing about regime change on the island.

Gross was sentenced to 15 years in jail earlier this year. His family and other prominent Americans have pleaded with Castro to release him on humanitarian grounds, noting that both his mother and daughter have been diagnosed with cancer since his incarceration.

Castro has voiced concern about Gross' condition, but the American was not included on a list of 2,900 prisoners the Cuban leader pardoned last week, most of them in jail for common crimes.

Gross' wife, Judy, said Saturday that her family was deeply distressed to hear that Gross was not included in the pardon.

"To receive news in the middle of Hanukkah that the Cuban authorities have once again overlooked an opportunity to release Alan on humanitarian grounds is devastating," she said.

Dworin said Gross was extremely anxious to get back home to his wife and family, but said he was upbeat during the visit.

She said they did not discuss Castro's prisoner amnesty at length during the Hanukkah celebration, but that Gross knew about it and was clearly disappointed not to be part of it.

"He wants to have hope," Dworin said. "We Jews always live with hope, or we would have disappeared from the earth long ago. A miracle could occur. After all it is Hanukkah, which is all about a miracle."

Hanukkah, which concluded Tuesday, is the Festival of Lights for Jews. The holiday commemorates the rededication of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem in 164 B.C. According to tradition, a candelabra was lit with only enough oil for one day, but it miraculously burned for eight days.

First Untethered Jailbreak Now Available For Pre-A5 Devices ? Not iPad 2 Or iPhone 4S Yet

Jailbreakers rejoice! Months of hard work from a developer known as ?pod2g? have resulted in the first ever untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.0.1 becoming available for iPhones, iPods and iPads.

It?s not all good news however, as the hack doesn?t work on Apple devices that use the newer A5 processor ? namely the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S.

If you?ve got an older Apple device running iOS 5.0.1 then you can jailbreak it using one of several methods, effectively freeing your device from Apple?s controlled grasp. Jailbreaking will install the Cydia app onto your iDevice ? a sort of unofficial app store, for those unfamiliar with the process.

Cydia opens up a world of possibilities, usually involving adding tweaks and features that Apple doesn?t deem fit for the general public, but will work perfectly on your gadget, making it stand out from the rest. There?s also access to a world of apps that haven?t been approved for use on the official App Store, of which some are fantastic.

Pod2g has released the untethered jailbreak for use on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPad, iPod Touch 3rd Gen and iPod Touch 4th Gen. To install it you can use one of two simple software tools for Mac and PC; Redsn0w or PwnageTool. By far the easiest way to jailbreak (as we?ve found) is to use Redsn0w 0.9.10b3 for Windows or Mac OS X, which allows you to install Cydia and jailbreak your device with ease and in under 5 minutes.

Alternatively you can use PwnageTool to create a custom IPSW (Operating System Software) file and install that onto your iDevice via iTunes. This is a slightly more lengthy process, as you?ll probably have to download the large IPSW file first, which is normally over 500MB in size.

At Gadget Helpline HQ a couple of us have already used Redsn0w to jailbreak our iPhones, with first time success found using an iPhone 4 and several iPhone 3GS.

For more information on the jailbreak and links to download both Redsn0w and PwnageTool, check out the official dev-team blog here.

Kinect sensor wants to guess astronauts' weight, tell them to hit the space gym

How do you weigh yourself when there's no gravity keeping you down? Well, you can calculate your mass by sitting on an oscillating spring and comparing its standing frequency to your riding frequency (NASA's current method), or you could rig up a Kinect sensor to tell you when you're getting fat. Carmelo Velardo, a Eurocom computer scientist in Alphes-Maritimes, France, is developing the latter option. Working with colleagues at the Italian Institute of Technology's Center for Human Space Robotics, Velardo paired the Kinect sensor's 3D modeling digs with a database of weight to body measurements of 28,000 people -- the resulting system can guess your weight with a 97 percent accuracy.

NASA scientist John Charles notes that while the rig works well on the ground, it might hit some snags in space. Microgravity can shift water around in an astronaut's body, changing their density and potentially throwing off the Kinect setup's readings. Still, Charles says the technique "appears feasible," and suggests pairing it with the existing weight measurement tools might "provide insights into changes in body density that might be illuminating." Velardo hopes to test the system in parabolic flight soon. If he succeeds, not even outer space will protect us from the shameful judgment of video game peripherals. Now if you'll excuse us, we have some squat-thrusts to get to.

Boom in Internet gambling ahead? US policy reversal clears the way.

The Justice Department has reversed a longtime view that online poker and lottery wagering are illegal. With the move, states are expected to engage in a high-stakes pursuit of new gambling-related tax revenues.

Cash-strapped states betting on new online poker and lottery revenues won a major victory with a recent Department of Justice announcement that it is reversing its interpretation of the federal 1961 Wire Act, clearing the way for a potential boom in online gambling.

Until now, the Justice Department had held that the Wire Act makes even intrastate online gambling illegal. Its?new interpretation, written by Justice Department attorneys in response to requests for clarification from New York and Illinois, concluded that the law instead specifically outlaws such wagering on sports, not nonsports gambling within states or even across state borders.

"The ordinary meaning of the phrase 'sporting event or contest' does not encompass lotteries," wrote Assistant Attorney General Virginia Seitz. "Accordingly, we conclude that the proposed lotteries are not within the prohibitions of the Wire Act."

With global online gambling now worth an estimated $30 billion, and with online poker worth a potential $6 billion annually in the US, some are heralding the decision as a means for financially strapped states to leverage new revenue from legalized online gambling ? and stave off at least some cuts to bureaucracies, entitlements, and public employee pension systems.

But gambling critics see the move as another major crack in America's moral foundation, opening the way for states to become further dependent upon tax revenues gained from a form of recreation that hits hardest those who can least afford it. In that light, the new US stance may prompt Congress to enact laws aimed at helping to curb addiction and to prevent children from becoming involved in online gambling, even while allowing "casual" gamblers more options and opportunities to play. So far, Congress has folded on a handful of proposed Internet gambling measures.

"The United States Department of Justice has given the online gaming community a big, big present," writes I. Nelson Rose, a Whittier Law School professor who blogs at gamblingandthelaw.com. "My bet is that ? Congress will continue to do nothing, while Internet gambling explodes across the nation, made legal under state laws."

The US has outlawed online "real money" poker since 2006, and in April the Justice Department charged three major online operators with fraud and money laundering for disguising bets as every-day credit-card payments. In a letter accompanying its announcement on Friday, the Justice Department noted that the new interpretation of law "will not undermine the Department's efforts to prosecute organized criminal networks. The significant majority of our current and past prosecutions concerning Internet gambling involve cases where the gambling activity is part of a larger criminal scheme."?

Driver Profile and Cheap Car Insurance - Guitars are my Passion

Cheap car insurance will disappear during the quote process if you the driver doesn?t have a perfect driving record. Each insurance company will compare risk factors related to driving habits and then give you a price on a policy. Some of the best car insurance companies will refuse to cover a driver with multiple traffic violations and accidents in order to obtain cheap car insurance. The driver?s record has a greater influence on car insurance premiums than anything else.

?

Although some may differ in price; every car insurance company looks favorably on good credit ratings. The company will award a discount to what they see as mature behavior. The actual percentage of discounts is different with each car insurance company. Staying focused on good credit practices and let those practices be your guide to cheap car insurance.

?

Most car insurance carriers will reward drivers that take training courses to develop their driving skills. A number of cheap car insurance companies may offer a 20 percent discount for attending a class.

Football Nfl I Giants strapazzano i Jets! New England rimonta i Dolphins e conquista il bye

Vincono in rimonta i Patriots, mentre crollano i Broncos. Colpo dei Raiders a Kansas City.

Ecco tutti i risultati:

Buffalo Bills ? Denver Broncos 40-13

New England Patriots ? Miami Dolphins? 27-24

New York Jets ? New York Giants 14-29

Baltimore Ravens ? Cleveland Browns 20-14

San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys ? Philadelphia Eagles e Seattle Seahawks ? San Francisco 49ers.

WNY Business and Foundation Leaders Announce Free College Tuition for Buffalo Public Schools

Say Yes To Education Announces Commitment to Invest Additional $15 Million to Increase Graduation and College-Going Rates and Bolster the Economy

BUFFALO, N.Y. ?December 20, 2011?Hundreds of students and community leaders cheered the announcements today from local business and foundation leaders and the New York City-based nonprofit foundation Say Yes to Education, Inc. that they will partner to invest millions of dollars to bolster the Western New York economy and increase high school graduation and college-going rates for students in the Buffalo Public Schools.

Say Yes to Education committed to bring an initial $15 million to partner with local providers to deliver comprehensive supports to all schools, including free after-school and summer programming, counseling, legal services, and health care. The Say Yes commitment is boosted by additional financial and in-kind supports provided by The Wallace Foundation and the American Institutes for Research to bolster planning, research and evaluation efforts.

Joining Say Yes in its commitment to Buffalo, Western New York business and foundation leaders extended an invitation to the community to join them in a ?promise? to fund scholarships for students in the Buffalo Public School system to cover up to 100 percent of their tuition at a post-secondary institution for the next 20 years.? The class of 2013 will be the first class eligible for the scholarships.

The Buffalo school board, local government officials, teachers union officials, the heads of local colleges and universities, leaders in the business community, and private funders have been working collaboratively over the past several months to recruit Say Yes to Education? to pick Buffalo as their next Say Yes City.?

Combined, the Say Yes Buffalo Promise initiative will invest millions of dollars toward improving student services throughout the city, helping to increase graduation rates and providing the promise of a college education to each of the city?s students.

Specifically, Say Yes will: ???

  • Provide students who graduate from a Buffalo Public School (traditional or charter) with up to 100 percent of the tuition needed to attend a SUNY post-secondary institution.? The amount of tuition support is based on financial need and length of time in the public school system which at a minimum can be four years of high school.
  • Provide comprehensive out-of-school supports?including after-school tutoring and summer learning opportunities?that extend learning time for students and place service coordinators in every school.
  • Support research and professional development to strengthen instruction and school performance; and
  • Create tools and strategies to help improve fiscal responsibility in spending and promote improved transparency for school and district performance.

A ?Turning Point? for Student Success and the Region

?Say Yes Buffalo will reward every child with the promise that if they work hard in school, graduate from high school and want to go to college, they will have the money to do so.? There is also an economic development component to Say Yes Buffalo that encourages families to stay or relocate to the city.? We welcome this new resource that will assist our children and families and improve academic achievement in Buffalo Public Schools,? said Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown.?

?We selected Buffalo because of its willingness to bring the entire community together to commit resources and rally around a single vision of change for all of its young people,? Mary Anne Schmitt-Carey, President of Say Yes To Education, Inc. ?Local leaders have established commitments across sectors to support success for an entire generation of students.?

?Family finances should not be a barrier to a bachelor?s degree; nor should anything else,? said George Weiss, founder of Say Yes to Education. ?Say Yes Buffalo will not only provide the incredible support of tuition guarantees, it will lessen the struggles children must overcome to succeed.?

Since its founding in 1987, Say Yes has provided scholarships and key supports to large cohorts of students in Philadelphia, Hartford, Conn., New York City and Cambridge, Mass. Since the program was implemented for all students in an entire city (Syracuse, New York), nearly 1,000 recent high school graduates have taken advantage of the scholarship, and Syracuse City School District high school students are showing promising signs of academic progress.

?The tuition guarantee and establishment of an expectation that all Buffalo Public School students can aspire to a postsecondary education are powerful incentives which bring hope and promise to every one of our 30,000 students. Say Yes?s impressive track record in working with inner-city youth coupled with their generous financial contribution and the support of local donors will serve as inspiring catalysts for change-and as a member of the Buffalo Board of Education, I am honored to pledge our commitment to this exciting effort,? said Lou Petrucci, president of the Buffalo School Board.

?We welcome Say Yes as a partner in transforming Buffalo Public Schools and ensuring more students are prepared for college and careers,? said Interim Superintendent Amber M. Dixon.

"The University at Buffalo has a strong partnership with the Buffalo Public School district to create a better future for Buffalo's next generation, and the Say Yes initiative builds in important ways on that partnership.? Ensuring equitable access to a first-rate education is vital to our mission as a public university, and this program is a valuable way for us to open the doors of opportunity to even more students in our region," said Satish K. Tripathi, President, University at Buffalo.

Alphonso O?Neil-White, President and CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York stated, "Today, I am proud to represent Western New York?s business and community leaders who know that ultimately, an investment in our kids is an investment in the future of our region.? If you want to do something good for Buffalo, support this effort.? We can?t do it alone and so on behalf of all of the contributors who have committed to funding scholarships, I want to issue a challenge to others:? Join us.???

?I am incredibly excited about the promise of the Say Yes initiative here in Buffalo.? As a teacher, to have the ability to walk into your classroom and tell your kids if you work hard, and you want to go to college or trade school money is not going to be a barrier for you achieving your dream.? This is going to give our kids opportunities that they would otherwise not have had,? said Buffalo Teachers Federation President Philip Rumore.

Next Steps

Among its next steps, Say Yes Buffalo also will reach out to broad segments of the community to engage parents and other adults, the faith community, leaders of minority- and youth-serving organizations, and educators to be part of the effort.

?An unprecedented cross-section of this community has stepped up and declared that together, we will unleash the potential of every child,? said Clotilde Perez-Bode Dedecker, President of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo and a key organizer of the initiative. ?We want all young people to know that if they work hard and graduate from high school, college is possible for them.?

?Our work is just beginning,? said Robert Gioia, President of The John R. Oishei Foundation, which also played a key role in bringing Say Yes to Buffalo. ?In the next few months, Say Yes will begin regular meetings - with community and non profit leaders to think through implementation steps that will affect every student, school, and neighborhood.?

AP: Feds approve new Ga. political maps (AP)

ATLANTA ? Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal's office says the Obama administration has approved new political boundaries in Georgia.

Deal spokesman Brian Robinson said the Department of Justice on Friday signed off on the maps for congressional and legislative districts.

State Democrats had complained that the maps diluted minority voting strength.

Georgia's past history of discrimination at the ballot box means all election changes must pass muster with federal officials to ensure they don't weaken African-American voting power.

Democrats have pledged to challenge the boundaries in court. But Republicans say the plans increase the number of districts with a majority of black voters.

Lawmakers must redraw legislative and congressional maps every 10 years to reflect changes in population from new U.S. Census figures.

Israel Is Wide Awake as Decision Time Approaches on Nuclear Iran

While David Miliband and Nader Mousavizadeh warn that "war talk" regarding Iran's nuclear programme may become a "self-fulfilling prophecy" (see "The Risks of Sleepwalking into a War with Iran," December 2), Israel has been publicly debating the wisdom of a military strike on Iran's programme. But it is not "sleepwalking" into a war.

Israel perceives a nuclear Iran as a potentially existential threat. The possible combination of extreme Islamism, a messianic leadership calling to "wipe Israel off the map" and nuclear weapons is deeply sobering. Given Israel's collective memory of the Holocaust and its hostile surroundings, Israelis take this threat especially seriously.

When Israel defines a nuclear Iran as "unacceptable," it means it. But it suspects that for the rest of the world, "unacceptable" really means "undesirable." Mr. Miliband and Mr. Mousavizadeh admit that the price of a nuclear-armed Iran would be "unacceptably high" but fail to say what should be done if non-military pressures fail.

The Israeli discourse is not mere sabre-rattling. It is a real debate driven by the feeling that Iran's nuclear project is advancing, international resolve is insufficient and regime change does not look imminent. Ehud Barak, Israel's defence minister, recently implied that the critical decision point, between "bomb" and "bombing" before it is too late, would be reached in under a year.

Either choice comes with a heavy price. Even assuming Iran can be deterred from using a nuclear bomb, a nuclear Iran will dramatically upset the strategic balance in a region undergoing revolutionary transition. Having defeated international pressure and acquired a nuclear umbrella, Iran will be emboldened as a radical regional pole.

A nuclear Iran will overshadow the calculations of regional actors, trigger a regional nuclear arms race, destroy the non-proliferation treaty and increase the danger of miscalculation towards a nuclear crisis. Iran will escalate its destabilising power projection, threatening Israel and moderate Arab regimes, undermining any peace process, manipulating energy markets and posing as guardian of certain Muslim communities even beyond the Middle East. Over time, one cannot rule out proliferation to non-state actors. Containment and deterrence will do little to offset these severe consequences.

A military strike, on the other hand, could entail serious unintended consequences. Iran will respond violently, both directly and through proxies such as Hizbollah, which has more than 40,000 rockets aimed at Israel. The conflict could escalate into a regional war. Iran may act aggressively in the straits of Hormuz, leading to a spike in oil prices, although disrupting oil exports would be self-defeating.

Journalist: Morgan must have known about hacking (omg!)

Piers Morgan, host of CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight," leaves the CNN building in Los Angeles, Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011. A tense and sometimes hostile Piers Morgan refuses to disclose details about the most damning link between himself and Britain's phone hacking scandal ? his acknowledgment that he listened to a phone message left by Paul McCartney for his then-wife Heather Mills. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)

LONDON (AP) ? CNN celebrity interviewer Piers Morgan was an extremely hands-on tabloid editor who must have known that phone hacking was rife at his paper, a former employee claimed Wednesday.

Business journalist James Hipwell said voicemail interception was an everyday activity at Britain's Daily Mirror, where he worked in the late 1990s as a columnist providing stock tips.

Hipwell told a British inquiry into media ethics that while he had no direct evidence that Morgan, the Daily Mirror editor at the time, was involved in the practice, he said it was impossible to imagine that Morgan had been kept in the dark.

"Nothing happened at the newspaper without him knowing," Hipwell testified, speaking a day after Morgan was grilled Tuesday in a tense, nationally televised hearing before the inquiry.

Before his U.S. television career, Morgan ran two British tabloids ? Murdoch's now-shuttered News of the World, between 1994 and 1995, which has been at the center of the U.K. phone hacking scandal, then the rival Daily Mirror, which is not connected to the Murdoch empire, where he stayed for nearly a decade.

Hipwell and Morgan have a long history. Both were investigated as part of an inquiry into market manipulation after it emerged that Morgan had made a quick profit of thousands of pounds (dollars) by buying shares that were promoted in the next day's paper.

Morgan was cleared of wrongdoing, but Hipwell and another tipster, Anil Bhoyrul, were convicted in 2005. Hipwell expressed remorse over his role in the stock scam but said he always believed that his former boss had been as guilty as he was.

"I can understand why people think that I have an ax to grind against him," Hipwell told the inquiry.

By Hipwell's account, phone hacking was a matter of routine ? a "standard journalistic tool for gathering information." He said journalists openly boasted about breaking into phones to intercept voice mails..

He challenged Morgan's assertion Tuesday that a tabloid editor could only monitor about 5 percent of his journalists' work, saying he often saw Morgan inspecting reporter's computer screens or working late into the night to tweak headlines.

Morgan "stamped his authority on every single page," Hipwell said. "The newspaper was built around the cult of Piers."

Morgan, 46, has already dismissed Hipwell's claims as the "unsubstantiated allegations of a liar and convicted criminal." Trinity Mirror Group lawyer Desmond Browne made a similar argument, saying his newspaper group rejected Hipwell's allegations.

However, testimony to the inquiry is given under oath, meaning speakers could be subject to criminal proceedings if found to have violated any British laws.

More than a dozen News of the World journalists have been arrested in the hacking scandal, senior executives with Murdoch's News Corp. media empire have lost their jobs, and top U.K. police officers have resigned over their failure to tackle the problem.

Authorities on Wednesday arrested their first serving police officer as part of an investigation into bribes paid to police by journalists seeking scoops.

London police said a 52-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was arrested on suspicion of corruption and misconduct in a public office. The woman was detained at a house in Essex, in southeastern England, and was being questioned.

Eight people, including a reporter working for The Sun tabloid, have so far been arrested as part of the police corruption inquiry, although no one has yet been charged.

Also Wednesday, the former editor of the News of the World lost a legal bid to make the owner of the now-defunct newspaper pay his legal bills.

Andy Coulson left the tabloid after a reporter and a private investigator were jailed for hacking in 2007.

He became Prime Minister David Cameron's communications chief but resigned when the phone hacking scandal erupted again earlier this year.

A High Court judge ruled that Coulson's severance agreement did not require the company to pay his costs relating to allegations of criminal behavior.

Separately, another judge ruled that Murdoch's News Group Newspapers had to continue paying the legal fees of Glenn Mulcaire, the private investigator at the center of the scandal.

High Court justice Andrew Morritt said the News International subsidiary News Group Newspapers was bound by an agreement last year protecting Mulcaire from costs and damages arising from voicemail litigation in which they were joint defendants.

The company, itself a subsidiary of Murdoch's News Corp., had tried to end the contract after it emerged publicly that it was still guaranteeing the costs of a convicted criminal. Mulcaire was jailed briefly in 2007, along with News of the World royal correspondent Clive Goodman, for eavesdropping on the phone messages of royal aides.

Goodman and Mulcaire remain the only two people ever convicted over the practice.

Washington Standoff: Obama Exploits Early Christmas Present

Update: Thursday evening, the House Republicans agreed to a deal.

Like most economists, I tend to assume that people act in their own best interests: not in all cases?heavy smokers and chronic gamblers are obvious exceptions?but as a general rule. How then to explain the latest actions of the House Republicans?

In voting down a Senate bill to extend payroll-tax cuts, as well as unemployment benefits for those who have been out of work for more than six months, Speaker Boehner and his colleagues have presented President Obama with an early Christmas present. No wonder he was looking so fired up (by his standards, anyway) in the White House briefing room Thursday, where, surrounded by a dozen or so ordinary Americans, he pointed out that many Republicans in the Senate had agreed to the compromise proposal, and snapped, ?Has this place become so dysfunctional that even when people agree we can?t get things done? Enough is enough.?

Having delayed his Christmas vacation in Hawaii until the stalemate is resolved, the President, for once, is in the catbird seat. If an agreement can?t be reached before the New Year, the typical American family will face a tax increase of about a thousand dollars a year, which is roughly forty dollars for each bi-weekly paycheck. A couple of days ago, somebody in the Administration had the smart idea of asking Americans, via Twitter and Facebook, what forty dollars means to them. According to the White House, more than thirty thousand people responded?you can see some of their comments here?and some of them were standing on the press-room dais with Obama.

It wasn?t immediately clear whether they included ?Joseph from New Jersey,? who said he would have to sacrifice a pizza night with his daughters, or ?Pete from Wisconsin? who said he would have to cancel a car trip to visit his father in a nursing home, but the President, in what was one of the most cleverly orchestrated and blatantly political events of his Presidency, told their stories anyway. For Republicans with any nous at all, it must have made for painful viewing.

Even before Obama?s appearance, some senior Republicans who can spot a disaster in the making were calling on their colleagues in the House to relent. Speaking on the Thursday edition of ?The Early Show,? on CBS, Senator John McCain said the standoff was hurting the Party and its hopes of winning the Presidential election?a point that echoed something Newt Gingrich said on Wednesday: ?Incumbent presidents have enormous advantages. And I think what Republicans ought to do is what?s right for America. They ought to do it calmly and pleasantly and happily.?

Also on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal?s editorial page, hardly a haven of moderate views, published a despairing comment, which began:

GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell famously said a year ago that his main task in the 112th Congress was to make sure that President Obama would not be re-elected. Given how he and House Speaker John Boehner have handled the payroll tax debate, we wonder if they might end up re-electing the President before the 2012 campaign even begins in earnest.

The headline on the Journal editorial was ?The GOP?s payroll tax fiasco: How did Republicans manage to lose the tax issue to Obama?? But the answer the article provided?political incompetence on the part of McConnell and Boehner?was woefully inadequate. Wary of the dangers they were facing, the two Republican leaders had reportedly agreed on the compromise deal that passed the Senate. This would have extended the tax cuts and unemployment benefits for two months. In return, the White House had provisionally agreed to bring forward its decision on the controversial Keystone XL pipeline.

It wasn?t McConnell and Boehner who formed what the Journal editorial aptly referred to as a ?circular firing squad.? It was the enrag?s in the House who rebelled against the deal, just as they rebelled, during the summer, against Boehner?s efforts to reach a compromise deal on the debt ceiling and the deficit. The stalemate that ensued helped bring Congress?s approval rating down to thirteen per cent in the August Gallup poll. Today, Congress?s approval rating is even lower: eleven per cent?the lowest figure recorded since Gallup started asking the question in 1974.

Sticking with the self-interest theory for a moment, one possible explanation for the Republicans? actions is that most congressional districts are now so uncompetitive, due to gerrymandering or whatever, that incumbents have no fear of losing office. I don?t find this argument persuasive. Many of the Tea Party supporters swept to victory in a midterm election. Such contests almost always see the Party that holds the White House losing seats. Presidential elections are very different. In what is shaping up to be a close race, many members of the Class of 2010 could be voted out.

A more compelling argument is that the Republican Party is no longer a mean electoral machine, but an uneasy alliance of potentially competing groups. As long as they are attacking President Obama, these groups get along fine. But when they have to actually govern and make decisions, big problems arise.

Despite all that has happened, the Republican establishment in Washington is still, fundamentally, the agent of corporate America and its most privileged denizens. Folks like McConnell and Boehner, but also strategists like Karl Rove and Stuart Stevens (Mitt Romney?s svengali figure), believe in occupying power, both to keep out the Democrats and to protect the interests of their wealthy supporters. Arrayed beneath this traditional structure is a seething populist movement that contains elements of everything from Know Nothing nativism to Poujadism to Christian fundamentalism to economic Libertarianism.

The representatives of this movement didn?t come to Washington to boost demand in the economy, to preserve tax breaks for the local gentry, or even, necessarily, to preserve their own seats. They came to put the country on a new path, downsize the federal government, and generally make a racket. After a year in the capital, they have succeeded in the third aim but not the first two?hence their frustration.

To Republican congressmen of this ilk, the Senate payroll-tax bill was a typically shoddy Washington compromise, which didn?t resolve any outstanding disputes but merely shooed them away for a bit. As it happens, the insurgents were right about that. Extending important tax and spending legislation for a period of two months is no way to run the world?s largest economy. But given the political realities of the moment, it was all the leaders of the two parties could cobble together.

In registering their protest vote, Eric Cantor and his crew have put themselves in an untenable position, from which, at some point in the next few days, they will surely try to extricate themselves. But don?t expect President Obama to do them any favors. So far the dispute has cost him a few days on the beach. The political benefits he has reaped are incalculable.

Newt Gingrich Attacked By Digital Vandals (Mashable)

In the latest act of online political sabotage, individuals who type newtgingrich.com into their browsers will be directed to one of a number of sites that are embarrassing to Republican primary candidate Newt Gingrich. Instead of finding a homepage for Gingrich's campaign, which is hosted at newt.org, visitors are redirected to sites like Tiffany & Co. (where Gingrich has a six-figure tab) or Freddie Mac (where Gingrich's role as "historian" has been called into question), or to news articles and YouTube videos that make conservative voters cringe, like this ad for former Vice President Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection. In the ad, Gingrich appears cozying up next to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to talk about climate change.

[More from Mashable: House Delays Taking Action on SOPA Until Dec. 21]

It's uncertain who's behind the mischief, which is the digital equivalent of supporters of one politician vandalizing?the lawn signs of an opponent in the dark of night. The newtgingrich.com domain is privately registered, so the owner's information is not readily accessible.

Gingrich's campaign wasn't immediately available for comment.

[More from Mashable: XXX Domains: An Obvious Failure]

Two weeks ago, rickperry.com was redirecting to Ron Paul's campaign website. That domain no longer redirects and is now up for sale, but the current owner's information is also private.

Both of these campaigns have been caught with their digital pants around their ankles. Many Internet users still consider the ".com" suffix to be standard. By failing to acquire these domains, Gingrich and Perry left themselves vulnerable to attack by digital vandals, who are taking advantage of anyone making the assumption that a candidate's homepage will be their name followed by ".com."

China sends long-missing lawyer Gao back to jail

BEIJING (AP) ? More than a year and a half after prominent civil rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng disappeared, China's government gave the first sign Friday that he is alive, saying he would be sent to prison for three years for violating his probation.

A brief report by the state-run Xinhua News Agency did not answer key questions about Gao ? the condition of his health and his whereabouts now and in the 20 months since he disappeared, presumably at the hands of the authorities.

"Are they sending him to a proper prison? Which prison was he at before? Where were they hiding him?" said Gao's brother, Gao Zhiyi, who has been on a quest to find his sibling.

Charismatic and pugnacious, Gao was a galvanizing figure for the rights movement, advocating constitutional reform and arguing landmark cases to defend property rights and political and religious dissenters. Convicted in 2006 of subversion and sentenced to three years, he was quickly released on probation before being taken away by security agents in 2009 in the first of his forced disappearances that set off an international outcry.

The Xinhua report referred to his 2006 subversion conviction and said Beijing's No. 1 Intermediate People's Court found that Gao "had seriously violated probation rules for a number of times, which led to the court decision to withdraw the probation."

The report did not explain what violations Gao had committed but said his five-year probation was due to expire next Thursday ? timing which legal experts said may have prompted the government to send Gao back to jail. "He would serve his term in prison in the next three years," the report said.

Calls to the No. 1 court and the city's appeals court rang unanswered Friday.

Gao has been held incommunicado in apparent disregard of laws and regulations for all but two months of the last three years. When he emerged from the first 14-month bout in April 2010, he told The Associated Press that he had been shunted between detention centers, farm houses and apartments across north China and repeatedly beaten and abused.

He said he had been hooded several times. His captors made him sit motionless for up to 16 hours and threatened to kill him and dump his body in a river.

"'You must forget you're human. You're a beast,'" Gao said police told him in September 2009.

At one point, six plainclothes officers bound him with belts and put a wet towel around his face for an hour, bringing on a feeling of slow suffocation.

"It's hard to fathom what they might be referring to when they say that he violated his parole given that he seems to have been under constant supervision," said Joshua Rosenzweig, a human rights researcher based in Hong Kong. "It's kind of cynical."

Formalizing Gao's detention as a prison term, Rosenzweig said, gives Chinese leaders a ready response to queries from foreign governments and officials. Gao's case has repeatedly been raised by the U.S. and European governments, drawing cryptic responses if any from Chinese officials. U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke mentioned him in a public statement last weekend.

Gao's wife, Geng He, fled China with their two children, escorted by human traffickers overland to Southeast Asia, around the time he first disappeared. They now live in the United States.

Activists in China seemed astounded and outraged by the news. Huang Qi, who runs a rights monitoring group in Sichuan province, strongly condemned what he said was the use of the judicial system to persecute dissidents and he offered his services to Gao's family.

"Gao Zhisheng has used his actions to write a glorious page in the history of the Chinese democracy movement," Huang said in a statement.

Amnesty International called the move to send Gao to prison "a travesty."

"This inhuman treatment must stop. Gao Zhisheng and his family have suffered enough and he must be freed," Catherine Baber, deputy director in Asia for the group, said in a statement.

While Gao may be the most prominent government critic to be treated so harshly in years, the authorities have done so with other dissidents.

Du Daobin, an outspoken critic also convicted of subversion and sentenced to three years in prison in 2004, did not immediately start his sentence, according to the Laogai Research Foundation, a Washington-based advocacy group that runs a website for which Du wrote. Instead, Du was released and lived under probation for four years before being sent to prison in 2008, apparently because he continued to criticize the government online.

Gao's family and supporters meanwhile have continued to campaign for him, with little result. His brother, Zhiyi, has been on a constant search for information. When he asked Beijing police in September about his brother, one officer told him Gao Zhisheng was a "missing person and no one knows where he is."
