PFT: McNabb says he should still be Vikings' starter

Green Bay Packers v Minnesota VikingsGetty Images

We?re trying to look in-depth at every team during their bye week.

The Bears, Jets, Bucs, and Raiders got the treatment earlier this week. Now up: The Packers.

Better than the champs

The Packers offense is better than it was during their Super Bowl season. To put it more precisely: The Packers? 2010 playoff offense has carried over into the 2011 regular season.

Pete Doughtery of the Green Bay Press-Gazette?asked the question?of?the Packers season this week. Do Green Bay?s defense issues matter when the offense is this ridiculous? ?The answer so far is no.

Rodgers easily the MVP?

It?s early, but Aaron Rodgers has been the best player in the league. ?He?s throwing for 9.9 yards-per-attempt. That would tie Kurt Warner for the highest number since the 1950?s. ?Rodgers? accuracy, decision-making, and play-making under duress has been epic.

Yes, the schedule set up well for Green Bay early. Few teams faced an easier early slate. But Rodgers is having a historical season.

?

More weapons

Jermichael Finley is healthy and catching touchdowns. It says a lot about this offense that Rodgers doesn?t need Finley to be a huge factor each week. ?Jordy Nelson consolidated his playoff success; he?s on pace for 1,000 yards. Randall Cobb isn?t a consistent threat, but he brings a new dimension to the offense. ?Greg Jennings and James Jones are who they have always been.

This is simply a better group than a year ago. Only the Saints have scored more points. ?Almost all the receivers are in their prime and know Mike McCarthy?s system well. Donald Driver?s decline barely matters; he?s the fourth or fifth wideout.

Line has held up

There were concerns in the preseason about the offensive line, but it has held up fairly well despite tackle Chad Clifton?s injury. Marshall Newhouse played well on the left side until facing the Vikings. The interior is strong. There may not be a better guard-center combo in the league than Scott Wells and Josh Sitton. Bryan Bulaga has continued to develop at right tackle.

More of the same from run game

This is not a great running team, but they aren?t as bad as the numbers indicate. The Packers rank 26th in yards?per-carry at 3.8. They were 25th last year. ?But the two key runners are better than that.

James Starks is at 4.5 yards-per-carry and Ryan Grant is at 4.0. Grant isn?t quite his old self and Starks could be more consistent, but it?s not a terrible group. Starks impressively closed out the win over Minnesota.

Defense takes step back

Green Bay?s defense gives up a lot of yards, like the Patriots. ?They still rank in the top ten in points allowed, like the Patriots. Points matter, not yards. ?The Packers are a good red zone defense team. They could stand to get better play from some of their young core cuys.

Clay Matthews has been good so far, but not to his 2010 level. ?The same is true for B.J. Raji. Tramon Williams hasn?t been 100%. Get that trio playing at a higher level, and the Packers defense could surge late in the year like in 2010. So far they have been ordinary.

Schedule gets much tougher

The Packers have benefited from one of the easiest schedules in the league. It gets tougher with road dates against the Chargers, Chiefs, Lions, and Giants. ?The Packers only face one team the rest of the way that currently has a losing record.

An undefeated season is very unlikely, but something around 14-2 sounds about right. That would result in the No. 1 seed in the NFC, a great spot from which to try to win another championship.

Thai PM vows 'we will recover soon'

Thailand's prime minister expressed optimism Sunday that the country's worst flooding in a half-century would mostly spare Bangkok, as some dikes overflowed but the capital's defenses otherwise held firm during critical high tides.

Waters were receding from many inundated areas of Thailand after killing 381 people, but the misery remained for several communities still under water and feverish efforts to protect downtown Bangkok continued as runoff from the north pushed through on its way to the Gulf of Thailand.

Rescuers evacuated a heavily pregnant woman stranded in the swamped neighborhood of Thonburi in the northern outskirts of the city.

"We had to get her to hospital," said marine rescue team member Nitipat Mongolpradit.

The network of dikes defending against the city's main Chao Phraya river broke down in at least two neighborhoods as a record high tide pushed up from the gulf, with water spilling into streets as city workers and troops rushed to shore up concrete walls with sandbags.

'We will recover soon'
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told residents of Bangkok to be "confident" as she headed into a government crisis meeting, saying there may be overflow into some areas but that it would not cause any great damage.

"We will recover soon," she said.

Bangkok's governor, Sukhumbhand Paribatra, said the Chao Phraya reached a record level early Sunday of 8.3 feet, just above dike heights. However, the tides were expected to ease below critical levels after Monday, and officials have suggested that the flooding situation will improve after that.

PhotoBlog: Thailand faces up to worst flooding in half a century

Floodwaters have submerged entire towns across the country's heartland and shuttered hundreds of factories over the last two months. In the past week, the waters have reached into outer neighborhoods of the capital, while its central districts of skyscrapers, apartment towers and glitzy malls have remained dry.

This weekend's high tides were described as the greatest test of the capital's flood defenses, and many wary business owners hastily built temporary cement-and-brick walls around their entrances.

Sanitation remains a problem
While downtown Bangkok was bone-dry, areas along the city's outskirts saw flooding spread. Seven of Bangkok's 50 districts ? all in the northern and western outskirts ? are heavily inundated. Eight other districts have seen less serious flooding.

Thousands of Bangkok residents used a special five-day holiday to leave town, with some wary of confusing warnings regarding the flood threat and others concerned about sparse supplies in stores due to weeks of panic buying and flood-related distribution problems.

The governor highlighted another threat: sanitation. He urged residents to make less garbage, saying refuse collectors were having trouble reaching all areas of Bangkok.

Giants fan's lawyer criticizes Dodgers attorney (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? An attorney for San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow has responded to comments made by a lawyer for the Los Angeles Dodgers who suggested Stow might be partly to blame for a brutal attack he received in a Dodger Stadium parking lot on opening day.

Thomas Girardi told the Los Angeles Times ( http://tinyurl.com/3vrtusb) on Friday it was wrong for attorney Jerome Jackson to say Stow may have to share some of the blame for the attack.

Jackson told ESPNLosAngeles.com that the Dodgers and their owner Frank McCourt shouldn't be held fully liable by a possible jury. The Stow family filed a lawsuit blaming the Dodgers organization and owner Frank McCourt for the attack.

Jackson filed a cross-complaint last week saying two men charged with beating Stow should be held liable.

Ericsson sells its Sony Ericsson stake to Sony (AP)

STOCKHOLM ? LM Ericsson and Sony Corp. announced Thursday they will go separate ways as Ericsson sells its 50 percent stake in mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson to Sony for euro1.05 billion ($1.46 billion).

Sony Ericsson will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony and integrated into Sony's broad platform of network-connected consumer electronics products, the Japanese company and Swedish wireless equipment firm said.

The transaction gives Sony an opportunity to quickly integrate smartphones into its portfolio of network-connected consumer electronics device, such as tablets, televisions and personal computers, the companies said.

The move was widely anticipated by analysts, who have argued Sony Ericsson could become more competitive in the tough smartphone market under sole Sony ownership.

Shares in Ericsson rose by 4.3 percent to 69.55 kroner ($10.6) in early Stockholm trading, while Sony stock climbed 5.4 percent to 1.65 yen ($21.7) before closing in Tokyo.

"I believe this improves the outlook for Sony Ericsson, because Sony can take full responsibility for the company and use the unique things that they have," said Greger Johansson, an analyst with research firm Redeye. "The opportunity to integrate the phones with their other products improves."

Johansson said the smartphone market is "extremely tough" and Sony Ericsson's competitors are also developing quickly.

He said the price Ericsson received wasn't great, but it will be a relief for the Swedish company to be able to focus on its core wireless equipment business and offload the mobile phone maker that has taken up a lot of management time.

"Sony Ericsson has no strategic value for Ericsson anymore," added Helena Nordman-Knutson, an analyst with Ohman Fondkommission in Stockholm.

Ericsson and Sony combined their unprofitable handset ventures into the joint venture Sony Ericsson in 2001 and enjoyed some early successes with its Walkman and Cyber-shot phones.

In recent years it has suffered from the competitive climate in the smartphone market and earlier this month the company posted a break-even third quarter result.

The company adopted Google's Android operating system for its smartphones in 2008, and has said it now controls about 11 percent of the Android-based smartphone market. Its Android-based Xperia smartphones account for more than 80 percent of its sales.

Thursday's deal will provide Sony with an intellectual property cross-licensing agreement, covering all products and services of Sony as well as ownership of five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology.

"We can more rapidly and more widely offer consumers smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment," Sony CEO, Sir Howard Stringer said, adding this includes Sony's own network services, the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network.

Stringer said the acquisition will also afford Sony operational efficiencies in engineering, network development and marketing.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, but has been approved by appropriate decision-making bodies of both companies.

Ericsson said the shift in the mobile market, from simple mobile phones to smartphones that include access to internet services and content, means the synergies for the company in having both a telecoms services portfolio and a handset operation have decreased.

"Ten years ago when we formed the joint venture, thereby combining Sony's consumer products knowledge with Ericsson's telecommunication technology expertise, it was a perfect match to drive the development of feature phones. Today we take an equally logical step as Sony acquires our stake in Sony Ericsson and makes it a part of its broad range of consumer devices," said Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg.

Ericsson said it will now focus on the global wireless market as a whole and how wireless connectivity can benefit people, business and society beyond just phones.

Ericsson and Sony will also set up a wireless connectivity initiative aimed at driving and developing the market's adoption of connectivity across multiple platforms, they said.

The agreement is expected to close in January 2012.

Halloween safety tips for pets

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Halloween can be a very scary time of the year for people and for pets. The Humane Society of Greater Dayton recommends taking some common sense precautions to keep you and your family pets safe this Halloween season.

Trick or Treat is for people, not pets. As much as your dog or cat may beg for some Halloween candy, always remember that chocolate can be very dangerous for dogs and cats! If you think that your pet has ingested any candy, please call your veterinarian; or the Care Center (937-428-0911); or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.

  • Holiday decorations such as carved pumpkins, electrical cords, plants, decorative corn, etc. should be kept away from your pets.
  • Don't leave any lighted candles or Jack-O-Lanterns out where they could be knocked over by a swinging tail or by a curious cat. Not only could your pet start a fire but they could severely burn themselves in the process.
  • Some pets really don?t seem to mind being dressed up in a costume while others find it very stressful. Please don't put your dog or cat in a costume unless you are certain that they can tolerate it. Also, please make sure that a costume is safe and does not constrict your pet?s movement or their ability to breathe freely.
  • Pets can be scared by children and adults in a costume. In addition, the frequent opening and closing of your front door to give out treats is an opportunity for your family pet to get out. Be cautions when opening and closing the door for ?trick or treaters?! Dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room where they are not exposed to strangers and scary costumes.
  • If you are having an indoor party, make sure that you put your dog or cat in a room where they won't be disturbed. Even if your pet is ?really friendly? and typically doesn't mind loud noises, music and lots of people, you should keep them separate for the night.
  • Please make sure that ALL of your pets have an ID tag in case they get out! A collar, ID tags and a microchip can save your pets life, and will dramatically increase the chances that he or she will be returned to you quickly.

?These tips are simple, effective ways to ensure your pet stays safe and healthy during Halloween,? said Brian Weltge, President & CEO, Humane Society of Greater Dayton. ?We always encourage pet owners to follow these guidelines so that Halloween is great family experience for your two-legged and four-legged family members.

For additional safety tips, please contact the Humane Society of Greater Dayton at 937/268-PETS or visit us online at www.hsdayton.org .

"Joe the Plumber" announces run for Congress (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, the Ohio man who as "Joe the Plumber" famously pressed then-presidential candidate Barack Obama on tax policy in 2008, said on Tuesday he was running for Congress.

Wurzelbacher said he would run as a Republican candidate for the House of Representatives in Ohio's 9th Congressional District, which includes the city of Toledo.

"If I'm coming off as angry, it's because I am," he said in the video of his official announcement posted on the website of FoxToledo.com.

"I just can't stand it when people do bad work. And we've been voting, the last 40 or 50 years, (for) bad people to do bad things to us. Why have we been doing it? Because we don't take our civic responsibility seriously enough," he said.

The district is currently represented by Democratic Representative Marcy Kaptur, first elected to the House of Representatives in 1982. Due to redistricting, she will face longtime Democratic lawmaker Dennis Kucinich in a primary.

In 2008, Wurzelbacher asked a few questions of Obama as the candidate campaigned door-to-door in an Ohio neighborhood, making him a focus of media reports.

The exchange was amplified in a debate shortly before the November 2008 election when Republican nominee John McCain cited Wurzelbacher as someone who would be hurt by Obama's tax plans and both candidates went on to refer to him more than two dozen times in the debate.

Wurzelbacher quickly became a political celebrity, particularly among Republicans who saw him as a working class everyman. But his reputation suffered when it was revealed the tradesman was not in fact a licensed plumber.

Digital bounty hunters unleashed

Online pay strategy quickly coordinates cross-country balloon posse

Web edition : 2:28 pm

These days, bounty hunters aren?t deputized, they?re digitized: Online crowd-sourcing strategies to induce masses of people to solve a task, such as locating far-flung items or alleviating world hunger, work best when financial incentives impel participants to enlist friends and acquaintances in the effort, a new study concludes.

In a competition to find 10 red weather balloons placed across the United States, a team of MIT researchers used online social media and a simple reward system to recruit balloon-searchers in the 36 hours preceding the contest. Their pay-based strategy garnered them 4,400 volunteers who located all the balloons in a contest-winning eight hours, 52 minutes.

?Our incentive system offers monetary rewards, but perhaps more importantly it builds social capital between you and the people you recruit, who get an opportunity to participate in something interesting,? says MIT computer scientist Alex Pentland. This strategy could boost the effectiveness of humanitarian and marketing campaigns, Pentland and colleagues conclude in the Oct. 28 Science.

Many digital crowdsourcing strategies have recently appeared. Paying people works for some tasks, as the MIT team found, but other tasks hinge on self-motivation that may get undermined by promises of money, says computer scientist Matthew Lease of the University of Texas at Austin. Wikipedia, for instance, parlays individuals? inherent interests and specialized knowledge into collective encyclopedia entries.

Other crowdsourcing incentives include creating opportunities for people to socialize with others, to gain public recognition and to contribute to a valued cause, Lease says.

The goal of the 2009 balloon-hunting contest was to explore digital strategies for rapidly mobilizing people into intelligence-gathering networks. More than 50 groups entered the competition, which was sponsored by DARPA, the Pentagon?s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Only MIT?s team found all 10 balloons. To get the recruiting ball rolling, the researchers sent a link for the team?s website to a few friends and several bloggers about 36 hours before the contest began.

Portions of the $40,000 winner?s prize were promised to everyone who contributed to the search. A maximum of $4,000 was allocated to finders of each balloon ? $2,000 to the first person to send in the correct balloon location, $1,000 to the person who invited the balloon finder onto the team, $500 to whomever recruited the inviter, and so on.

Participants received about $33,000 for their efforts.

The number of Twitter messages mentioning the MIT team rose substantially the day before the contest and remained elevated until the competition ended, a sign that the reward strategy worked, Pentland says.

Second-place finishers from the Georgia Institute of Technology recruited 1,400 participants by offering to donate winnings to the American Red Cross. They located nine balloons in nine hours. Their strategy sparked a brief rise in team-related tweets that faded before the contest started, suggesting that do-good appeals didn?t mobilize volunteers as much as pay incentives did.

Mexican army raids bulletproofing auto shop

The Mexican army have found an auto shop used to bulletproof vehicles for drug gangs.

Ten people were arrested and soldiers confiscated 10 cars or SUVs that were being bulletproofed, as well as six other vehicles in a warehouse in the northern state of Sinaloa, said the army in a late-Monday statement.

Authorities did not say which cartel managed the shop, but it was in the home state of Mexico's most-wanted drug lord Joaquin Guzman, who is known as "El Chapo."

In border states such as Tamaulipas, soldiers have raided similar bulletproofing auto shops and found freight trucks completely covered in steel.

The army's operation in Sinaloa took place Sunday.

In Acapulco, federal police caught a young woman and a young man as they were getting off a car near a shopping mall with an ice chest, and inside a decapitated head and other human remains, authorities said Tuesday. Police followed them because the car matched the description in a kidnapping report.

Inside their vehicle, police found another head inside another ice chest and poster boards. When drug gangs commit crimes, they often leave messages against rival groups.

Federal police said 19-year-old Damaris Gomez, or "Guera" a nickname for blonde, is the leader of a hitmen cell working for "the street sweeper" gang. The 21-year-old man riding with her is an alleged hitmen, police said.

The local gang is fighting against the Independent Cartel of Acapulco for control of the coastal city following the 2010 arrest of a suspected drug capo for the Beltran Leyva cartel, Edgar Valdez Villarreal, also known as "La Barbie."

In the northern border city of Ciudad Juarez, across from El Paso, Texas, police found the dismembered bodies of four men in bits scattered around the city.

Prosecutors spokesman Arturo Sandoval said police first found two heads and parts of two bodies at street corner in the southern part of the city, along with a handwritten message saying "To the New Juarez cartel, keep recruiting, we're waiting for you."

The New Juarez Cartel is a group that recently appeared, and which accuses authorities of favoring the Sinaloa cartel, which is fighting a bloody turf battle against local gangs for control of Ciudad Juarez.

The other victims' remains were found scattered elsewhere in the city later in the day.

Amid continuing reports about the operation of U.S. intelligence officers in Mexico, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City issued a statement Tuesday saying that "in accordance with Mexican law, the U.S. government does not carry out law enforcement operations in Mexico. That is a job for Mexican authorities."

The U.S. statement noted that "we closely cooperate with Mexican authorities in that effort, in full respect for Mexico's sovereignty and Mexican law, for the mutual benefit of our two counties and our shared goals. The U.S. government does this by providing equipment and training, and by sharing information."

As the realisation that radiation emitted by the sun can give rise to skin cancer has increased, so also has the use of sunscreen creams. These creams, however, can give rise to contact allergy when exposed to the sun, and this has led to an increasing incidence of skin allergy. Scientists at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology are leading the hunt for a natural UV filter that does not have undesired effects.

"Unfortunately, several of the chemical UV filters used in sunscreens cause contact allergy, either of themselves or when they are exposed to sunlight. We have therefore studied a UV filter, scytonemin, that is found in certain bacteria. We have managed to produce this substance artificially in the laboratory", says Isabella Karlsson, research student in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg.

Sunlight contains two types of UV radiation. The type known as "UVA" penetrates deeply into the skin and causes the pigment that we already have to darken. UVA, however, also causes the skin to age prematurely. The most common chemical UVA filter on the market is 4-tert-butyl-4'-methoxy dibenzoylmethane, BM-DBM, which is known to cause photocontact allergy when it reacts on the skin. Isabella Karlsson has shown that BM-DBM breaks down in UV light to form several different products. One of these, a group of substances known as "arylglyoxals", proved to be very potent contact allergens.

Isabella Karlsson also describes in her thesis studies of a relatively new UV filter, octocrylene. The popularity of octocrylene has increased a great deal since it is not broken down by sunlight, and it stabilises other substances such as, for example, BM-DBM. However, several reports of allergic reactions to octocrylene have appeared in recent years. Clinical studies and laboratory experiments have suggested that octocrylene can cause contact allergy, both of itself and when it is exposed to sunlight. Many patients who reacted by developing photocontact allergy to octocrylene developed photocontact allergy also to the drug ketoprofen.

"We tested 172 patients with suspected skin reactions to sunscreen creams and/or the drug ketoprofen in one of our studies. It turned out that 23 of these patients reacted to the UV filter octocrylene. Five of them were diagnosed with contact allergy and the other 18 with photocontact allergy."

So Isabella Karlsson is placing her hopes onto the natural product scytonemin. She has managed to produce this substance artificially, in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology. Scytonemin is produced by certain cyanobacteria that live in habitats exposed to very strong sunlight. Scytonemin absorbs UV light and thus protects the bacteria from being damaged by the sun's radiation. More research will be required, however, before it can be added to sunscreen creams.

###

The thesis Chemical and Dermatological Aspects of UV-absorbing Compounds has been successfully defended at a disputation held at the University of Gothenburg.

Wilmington woman charged with insurance fraud ? Behind the ...

Wilmington police arrested a woman last week on suspicion of fraudulently reporting that an overflowing toilet wrought damage to her home at 118 Trombay Drive.

State Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin made the arrest public Monday, saying that the suspect, Stephanie Jean Holanek, 40, collected $27,430 for expenses filed as part of her allegedly phony September 2009 claim to her insurance provider, State Farm Fire and Casualty Insurance Company. Holanek, authorities said, also tried to bilk the insurance company out of an additional $9,321 for other spurious expenses.

Holanek was accused of fraudulently claiming water damage to the main level of her two-story house, which tax records show is 2,289 square feet in size and last appraised by the county at $423,251.

Wilmington police arrested Holanek on Thursday, and a magistrate placed her under an unsecured bond, meaning she was released pending trial. She faces four counts of insurance fraud, three counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretenses.

Ky. theater says singer Loretta Lynn has pneumonia (AP)

ASHLAND, Ky. ? A Kentucky theater says Loretta Lynn has been hospitalized with pneumonia.

The country singer was scheduled to perform Saturday at the Performing Arts Center in Ashland, Ky., but the center issued a release saying she is in the hospital and will be unable to do the concert. The center says the show will be rescheduled.

Marketing director Jenny Holmes confirmed the statement to WOWK-TV. She didn't elaborate on Lynn's condition (http://bit.ly/qGAITb).

Calls by The Associated Press to representatives of Lynn were not immediately returned Saturday.

In August, Lynn canceled shows because of knee surgery. Before that, the 76-year-old returned to live performances with a show at the Grand Ole Opry after being forced to cancel shows in Ohio and Connecticut because she was hospitalized for heat exhaustion.

Officials: Soldier kills deputy, then self in Ga.

(AP) ? A National Guardsman who appeared to be drunk and firing gunshots at passing cars shot and killed a sheriff's deputy, then committed suicide on a Georgia road, authorities said Sunday.

Evidence shows Spc. Christopher Michael Hodges, 26, fired 35 rounds from his M4 semiautomatic rifle, Richmond County Sheriff's Capt. Scott Gay said. Hodges and Deputy James D. Paugh, 47, were found dead on the side of Bobby Jones Expressway after 1 a.m. Sunday.

Hodges served in the Tennessee National Guard but was on temporary duty at Fort Gordon in eastern Georgia for training, said Buz Yarnell, a spokesman for the military post. Yarnell said he was not aware of any problems with Hodges before the shooting and he would not say if Hodges had previously been deployed in combat.

Sheriff Ronnie Strength told The Augusta Chronicle that Paugh was off duty and on his way home when he saw a suspicious car on the side of the road. He was shot several times when he stopped to check on the car and apparently fired two shots from his service weapon before he was killed.

"He was just checking that car. He pulled over his motorcycle and didn't even get to put the kickstand down before the suspect began firing on him," the sheriff said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Atlanta. Yarnell declined to release more information on Hodges until the investigation is complete.

The sheriff's department said Paugh had been with the department for 17 years and was an avid motorcycle rider and cook. Gay said Paugh would cook turkey for his fellow deputies during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Authorities said Hodges had been having some sort of dispute with a female, though it does not appear Paugh knew about that. Gay said authorities took the woman into custody for questioning.

No one else was injured in the shooting, Gay said.

Two people could be heard speaking inside a house at Hodges' last known address in Millington, Tenn., about 15 miles northeast of Memphis. A woman who answered the door at the house declined comment to an Associated Press reporter and refused to say whether he lived there and if she was related to Hodges.

Neighbors said Hodges moved into the brown one-story home with his wife about a year ago. They said she also serves in the military and they were quiet or often away from home.

"He seemed like a cool guy, jovial," said next-door neighbor Melvin Johnson, 43.

Tennessee National Guard spokesman Randy Harris said he had no information about Hodges or the shooting.

Funeral services for Paugh were incomplete as of Sunday afternoon.

3D Printers To Save Hermit Crabs

FTFA:

With a shell shortage, hermit crabs around the world are being forced to stick their butts into bottles, shotgun shells, and anything else they can find.

I keep tellin' them pesky neighborhood ranch association folks that it ain't no trash in my front yard. That there's a Hermit Crab Sanctuary.

And them crabs keeps their kids off my lawn.

At least I think there's still a lawn down there below the trash.

Stocks rise sharply on solid corporate earnings (AP)

Stocks rallied Friday after several big U.S. companies reported solid third-quarter earnings. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 200 points.

Fast-food giant McDonald's Corp. rose 2.8 percent after reporting a 9 percent increase in income. The results beat analysts' expectations and marked McDonalds' ninth straight quarter of gains.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. leaped 7.1 percent after reporting a 25-percent jump in third-quarter income. The fast-casual chain raised prices, sold more burritos and opened new stores.

Harman International Industries Inc. jumped 11.9 percent, the most in the Standard & Poor's 500, after the audio equipment maker's income came in far ahead of analysts' expectations.

The encouraging corporate news was in line with recent indications that the U.S. economy strengthened in September after a very weak summer. On Friday the government said unemployment fell last month in half of U.S. states and was unchanged in 11. That's much better than August, when unemployment rose in 26 states.

The Dow rose 200 points, or 1.7 percent, to 11,742 at 12:40 p.m. Eastern time. It has not gained more than 200 points in a single day since Sept. 26. The Dow is now up 1.4 percent from the start of 2011. It was down for the year before Friday's rally.

The S&P 500 added 18, or 1.5 percent, to 1,233. The Nasdaq composite index gained 32, or 1.2 percent, to 2,630.

The S&P's gain put the index on track for its first three-week winning streak in eight months. Both the Dow and the S&P turned positive for the week on Friday.

The Dow has gained 10.2 percent since hitting a yearly low on Oct. 3. The S&P is up 12.52percent. However, the Dow remains 8.4 percent below its high for the year, reached on April 29. The S&P has declined 9.6 percent since then.

Traders are monitoring Europe's efforts to solve the Greek debt crisis. Worries about a default by Greece have caused much of the market's volatility in recent months.

European markets closed sharply higher as investors hoped that European leaders will agree on a package of measures to address the region's debt crisis in time for a summit scheduled tentatively for Wednesday. Germany's DAX index rose 3.6 percent. France's CAC 40 and Italy's FTSE MIB rose 2.8 percent.

Traders had hoped for a plan to be forged at a summit on Sunday. But talks between France and Germany this week have broken down repeatedly. They said Thursday there will be no deal before a second summit next week. The two countries disagree about the size of losses that private banks should take on Greek debt that they own, among other issues.

Traders sold ultra-safe U.S. Treasury debt as riskier assets rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.21 percent from 2.18 percent late Thursday. Bond yields rise as demand for them falls and their prices decline.

Stocks were lifted earlier this week by modestly better news about the U.S. economy. The number of people claiming unemployment benefits declined this week. Housing construction picked up last month, at least for apartment buildings. Inflation remains low.

Among the companies reporting earnings late Thursday or Friday:

? General Electric Co.'s income rose 18 percent as its lending business recovered, but profit margins shrank in key business. The stock fell 1.5 percent.

? Microsoft Corp.'s income rose 6 percent and its revenue beat Wall Street estimates. The stock rose by a penny.

? Verizon Communications Inc.'s income doubled from last year, mainly because of pension adjustments. Its adjusted earnings beat expectations. But Verizon's bottom-line result masked a weak quarter for its local phone business, which faced a major worker strike and post-hurricane repairs. The stock rose 1.9 percent.

China rare earths supplier suspends production (AP)

BEIJING ? China's biggest producer of rare earths is suspending production for one month in hopes of boosting slumping prices of the exotic minerals used in mobile phones and other high-tech products.

This week's move by Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Rare-Earth (Group) Hi-Tech might fuel tensions with the United States and Europe. They have questioned Beijing's decision announced earlier to limit exports while it tries to develop its own manufacturers of magnets and other products made of rare earths.

In a statement through the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Baotou Steel said it wants to "balance supply and demand" after prices for rare earths fell amid uncertainty about the U.S. and European economic outlooks.

Rare earths are a group of 17 minerals used in manufacturing flat-screen TVs, mobile phones, batteries for electric cars, wind turbines and weaponry.

China has about 30 percent of global rare earth deposits but accounts for 97 percent of production. Beijing has alarmed global manufacturers by reducing exports, prompting pressure from Europe and the United States to treat foreign and domestic buyers equally.

Baotou Steel accounts for 60 percent of China's rare earths production "so the impact on the market supply will be substantial," said Sun Fan, a rare earth analyst for Goldstate Securities in the southern city of Shenzhen.

Sun said that Baotou Steel also plans to buy rare earths to support prices.

"The dual measures of suspension and purchase will offer support for the rare earth prices and make the prices gradually pick up in the future," Sun said.

In China, prices of some rare earths have fallen sharply since June.

The price of neodymium oxide has declined 34 percent to $157 per kilogram, while europium oxide is down 35 percent at $2,904 per kilogram, according to Lynas Corp., an Australian rare earth producer.

Beijing is merging its rare earths producers to tighten control over production, sales and pricing.

It announced in June that Baotou Steel would become the only miner, refiner and seller of rare earths in the northern region of Inner Mongolia, a production center. It said 35 other companies there would be merged or closed.

Sichuan province in the southwest and Shandong in the east also have abundant rare earths deposits.

The United States, Canada and Australia also have rare earths but stopped mining them in the 1990s as lower-cost Chinese ores flooded the market.

Since then, Chinese officials have been concerned that uncontrolled exports were allowing Western and Japanese producers of lightweight magnets and other products made of rare earths to capture most of the profits.

Companies are restarting production in Canada, California, Russia and elsewhere but it will be some time until those supplies make it to market.

In September, China's Ministry of Land and Resources ordered a further tightening of controls on exploration, mining and sales of rare earths, which it called China's "21st century treasure trove of new materials."

Deal for new search for US war dead in North Korea (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Pentagon says it has agreed with North Korea to resume ? after a six-year break ? the search for remains of U.S. servicemen unaccounted for from the Korean War.

The deal was made Thursday after three days of negotiations in Bangkok.

The U.S. and North Korea began working together on the recovery of U.S. war remains in 1996. But in 2005 the Bush administration called a halt, saying it was concerned for the safety of the U.S. teams in North Korea.

The Korean war ended with an armistice in 1953.

The new searches are part of a broader U.S. effort to improve relations with North Korea. Next week it plans to hold what the State Department calls exploratory talks with the North on its nuclear weapons program.
