No celebration for this lesbian
By Lauren Taylor

I?m a progressive, out lesbian, but I?m not doing a happy dance about President Obama?s support for gay marriage.

Here?s the thing: I don?t think we (the country, the society) should be giving rights, privileges and protections to anyone ? gay, straight, bisexual or other ? based on their sexual or romantic relationships. I think most of the rights and privileges gay men and lesbians are seeking by pursuing marriage rights should be granted to human beings because they are human beings, whether or not they find one person they want to spend the rest of their lives with.

A few examples:

? Everyone should be able to designate who they want to be able to visit them in the hospital. Everyone should be able to take leave to care for a sick loved one.

? Everyone should have access to health insurance. If you?re self-employed, unemployed or work for a place that doesn?t provide health insurance, you shouldn?t need to have a romantic partner who has a job that provides health benefits to get coverage.

? If a couple with a child splits, married or not, all parents should be eligible for visitation and responsible for child support.

? Everyone who pays into Social Security should be able to list who is financially dependent on them and who should get benefits when they die. Our current system shortchanges any dependent who isn?t married to a wage earner.

What about single people? Are they less deserving of the legal protections couples get? Why should rights, privileges and protections be based on anyone?s ability to find ?Mr. /Ms. Right? and maintain a sexual/romantic relationship? Do other kinds of relationships (like parent-child, or adult siblings, or single best friends who live together and rely on each other financially and emotionally) not deserve protection?

I don?t think we have to aspire to some narrow ideal of family/couplehood to deserve rights. We deserve rights because we?re human beings, not because we?re achieving some level of similarity to the heterosexual ideal.

So you might be surprised to hear that I also love the idea of marriage. I love the idea of commitment, of getting community and family support for a relationship, and of the accountability to that community and family. I think anyone who wants to should have a ceremony and make a commitment and throw a big party. But that shouldn?t affect whether they then get health insurance, or get to take time off to take a sick person to the doctor, or are able to sign a permission form for a field trip.

I?m not fighting for access to marriage, and I wish that wasn?t where the gay rights movement was putting most of its effort and resources. (Violence, housing, employment, education, anyone?) But (with apologies to Groucho Marx), if someone is trying to keep me out of this club, I want in. How dare anyone say that I don?t deserve access to marriage and all it brings? How dare they say I, and my relationships, aren?t good enough?

I?d just prefer that LGBTQ people be recognized and accepted for being human beings, period. And that all human beings, regardless of relationship status, are assured their rights. That?s why I?m not celebrating the president?s ?evolution.?

HBT: Marlins' Oviedo suspended 8 weeks

Juan Carlos Oviedo finally arrived in the United States today after receiving a travel visa, but it will be a while before he?s pitching for the Marlins again.

Major League Baseball announced this afternoon that Oviedo has been suspended eight weeks for engaging in age and identity fraud. Ovideo, formerly known as Leo Nunez, has been working through legal issues in his Dominican Republic after admitting to falsifying his identity last September. The suspension takes effect immediately and he?ll be eligible to rejoin the Marlins on July 23 against the Braves.

Oviedo saved 92 games for the Marlins from 2009-2011 while posting a 3.86 ERA and solid secondary numbers, but the team signed Heath Bell to a three-year, $32 million contract during the offseason to take over as closer. While that contract hasn?t worked out so well thus far, Bell will likely be given every opportunity to keep his job.

Syrian activist @HamaEcho reports that the Syrian Revolution General Commission, an opposition coalition, has called for the UN to end Kofi Annan's peace plan.

The BBC's Leana Hosea writes of the video showing the massacre in Houla:

On a bedroom floor dozens of little children lie dead, their arms and legs strewn over one another. Many of their eyes are still open, bearing a look of shock and fright. They are all covered with blood and obviously suffered terrible deaths.

Official news agency SANA reports that the UN mission chief Major General Robert Mood called the Houla massacre a "brutal tragedy."

Google Page Rank Drop Down

Hi Dear Members,

My website had a google PR of 2 but they dropped it to 1 all of a sudden. Does anyone know why these things happen? All the links are dofollow and I've used CommentLUV in Comments.

Read somewhere that it might be temporary. But how do we make sure that it will go back the 2?

?

My site experienced something similar. I did create two new pages and linked them from the home page. Can that have an effect on page rank?

Well, I create and publish a new post on my blog 2 to 3 times a week. I don't think creating a new page and link it back to the home page would solve the issue.

Any new idea?

Google Page Rank Drop Down

Page rank by Google now a day very difficult because of their new algorithms as we called Panda. So before doing any thing unusual on your site just go through once the new policy of google. This will help you a lot.

Content has nothing to do with PR, the only way to gain PR is to build links.

Basically, PR is passed on from other sites so if you are aiming to gain more PR you need to build links from pages (thats the page not the site) that has a high PR and low link count in order to have a good amount of PR passed down to your link.

You can go into more details on the subject by searching for things like "pagerank flow" and "passing on link juice" etc.

But if you want to rank higher on google to gain more traffic and ultimately make more sales, you should be worrying about getting quality links to rank, and not be worrying so much about the toolbar pagerank as that not going to get you at the top of google.

Good sharing about PR. Now i am going to see the new rules of google.

Google has a fast changing ung algorithm so we have to look for what are the do's and dont's, we need to maintain build more quality links, and fresh and unique content for our site is a big factor too.

It appears, however, that Google?s own PageRank has gone down from a 10 to a 9. Make of this what you will, but it is quite interesting that the controller of all PageRank would devalue its own.

Google regularly check it and if you have not good quality backlink, your site PR decreases.

Google changes the algorithm frequently. You have to read their new algorithm, specially the Panda Update. Now the Google Page depends upon quality contents and natural backlinks after the release of Google Panda.

Sporting snaps winless streak

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:12 p.m. ET May 27, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - C.J. Sapong broke a seven-match goal drought, and Kei Kamara scored his team-leading fifth goal and added an assist to help Sporting Kansas City beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 on Sunday.

Sporting (8-3-1) broke a four-match winless streak.

Simon Dawkins scored in the 72nd minute for San Jose (8-3-3), cutting it to 2-1.

Kamara set up Sapong's fifth-minute goal with a long cross from the right flank, with Sapong finishing with his left foot from 7 yards for his fourth goal of the season.

In the 39th, left back Michael Harrington took a cross-field pass from right back Chance Myers, then fed the ball in to Kamara for a bouncing header past goalkeeper Jon Busch.

Harrington was a 23rd-minute substitute for Seth Sinovic, who fell over the end boards and sustained a cut on his left hand that required 20 stitches. Sinovic was already playing with his broken right hand in a cast.

San Jose was without its two leading scorers, with Chris Wondolowski (11) goals) on international duty and Steven Lenhart (five goals) suspended for yellow-card accumulation, but still made the game close.

'Nasty' Spurs strike first against Thunder

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? It's a catchphrase likely coming soon to fan T-shirts, Internet memes and the lexicon of the NBA playoffs for the foreseeable future.

"I want some nasty!"

Gregg Popovich didn't just coin it. He snarled it, and the way his San Antonio Spurs obliged has the Western Conference finals off to a thrilling start.

Manu Ginobili scored 26 points and the Spurs won their 19th in a row ? tying the NBA record for longest winning streak kept alive in the playoffs ? by rallying in the fourth quarter on the orders of their furious coach to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-98 in Game 1 on Sunday night.

It was a tantalizing near-upset for the young Thunder, who came as close as anybody to beating the Spurs for the first time in 46 days. But a nine-point lead didn't last after the famously mercurial 63-year-old Popovich ? the NBA's Coach of the Year ? huddled his lagging team together in the fourth and told them to "get nasty."

"I said that?" Popovich said afterward.

A nationally television audience heard it.

"The heat of the game, stuff comes up," Popovich said. "So I talked to them about they've got to get a little bit uglier, get a little more nasty, play with more fiber and take it to these guys. Meaning you have to drive it, you have to shoot it."

And when they did, the Thunder couldn't keep up.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 27 points. Russell Westbrook had 17, and insisted he was OK after taking a spill that was nasty in its own right ? face first, bracing his fall with his hands and sitting under the basket for more than a minute while the entire Thunder bench walked across the court to check on their All-Star point guard.

"I shot good shots, made good passes," Durant said. "Unfortunately, we lost."

After being held to just 16 third-quarter points, San Antonio scored 39 in the fourth. Westbrook chalked it up to a defensive breakdown that "got out of hand" but it still left the Thunder in search of the road win they'll need to in this series to reach the NBA finals for the first time since the franchise moved to Oklahoma City in 2009.

Game 2 is Tuesday night.

"How it happened is irrelevant," Thunder guard Derrick Fisher said of letting a lead slip away. "Whether we lose by 20 or lose by one, we lost."

That's something the Spurs haven't been able to say since April 11. They joined the 2001 Lakers as the only other team to carry a winning streak this long in the playoffs ? and that Los Angeles team did so on its way to a championship.

The Spurs matched the fourth-longest streak in NBA history, and with one more will become just the fourth team to surpass 20. Tim Duncan had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Tony Parker shook off a dismal start to finish with 18 points.

And of getting "nasty"?

"Pop's always trying to motivate us," Parker said.

But it was Ginobili who steered the Spurs to strike first in a highly anticipated matchup of the West's top two teams for practically the entire regular season. In his first game against the Thunder this year ? he was sidelined by injury in the three regular-season meetings ? Ginobili put up a playoff high after sputtering through the first two series.

"It just happened," Ginobili said. "I don't know how exactly because I haven't scored like this all season long, but it happened and I am very happy about it."

On the other end, Oklahoma City's own Big Three struggled to find its shot early before awakening in the second half. Durant, Westbrook and James Harden at one point through the second quarter were 5 of 21 ? a typically ominous stat line for a trio that had been responsible for nearly 70 percent of Oklahoma City's points through the playoffs so far.

The Thunder were ousted in the Western Conference finals a year ago and were in position for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs until being overtaken by the Spurs in the final month of the season. But it was a fittingly close opener for two franchises with so many similarities.

That includes Thunder general manager Sam Presti ? the architect of the Thunder's rapid turnaround from a 23-win season to consecutive Western Conference finals in just four years ? getting his big break in the NBA as intern in San Antonio.

And the Thunder didn't even need their own Big Three to keep things close.

They leaned on none more so than Fisher, whose famous game-winner for the Lakers on this same court in the 2004 playoffs has made "0.4 seconds" a phrase that needs no further explanation to the Spurs. Eight years later, and the oldest player in this series at 37, Fisher already met his playoff average at halftime and finished with 13 points.

Gary Neal added 12 points and was the only other Spurs player in double figures.

Harden lost in the first round of his matchup with Ginobili, who's also a lefty and a former Sixth Man of the Year winner. Harden finished with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting but started by missing nine of his first dozen shots.

Tipping off another conference finals couldn't happen soon enough for Oklahoma City. With nothing to do but prepare for the Spurs all week ? and be asked about the Spurs ? the Thunder grew weary of questions about being perceived underdogs. About not having the same championship pedigree. About how they'll possibly stop a team rolling through one of the 10 longest winning streaks in NBA history.

So repetitive were the questions that Durant, visibly annoyed, suggested earlier this week that someone instead ask how the Thunder are going "to come at" the Spurs. That didn't stop Oklahoma City from facing more of the same at shootaround Sunday morning, when Thunder coach Scott Brooks tried quashing again the idea his team was somehow intimidated.

"They're not going to be in awe. They're going to have respect for them," Brooks said. "We know we can beat them."

They've still got to prove it.

Notes: Spurs C DeJuan Blair has given the Thunder fits in his three NBA seasons, including 22 points on them in a March win. But San Antonio's starting center for practically the entire season didn't play for the third consecutive playoff game. "The game will tell us what's appropriate and what's not," Popovich said before tipoff. ...Just because a Boston-Oklahoma City matchup in still possible in the NBA finals doesn't mean center Kendrick Perkins is hopeful about facing his old team. "I really don't care," Perkins said of the Celtics advancing. ...Gov. Rick Perry took in his first Spurs game this year, sitting courtside next to Spurs owner Peter Holt, a major donor to the former Republican presidential candidate.

The Business Finance Store Discusses Small Business Outsourcing ...

The Business Finance Store discusses things and places to consider when thinking about outsourcing small business tasks.

Santa Ana, CA (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

The City of Costa Mesa, CA took the first steps this week to outsourcing jail services and street sweeping in order to save tax payers money, The Orange County Register reported. In this sense, the term outsourcing is more akin to contracting out locally rather than what the average person traditionally thinks of when they hear the term outsourcing. Despite the negative connotation of the term outsourcing, the practice can often save small business owners a fair amount of money, thus keeping their business in the black. In the recent blog post Best Countries for Outsourcing, The Business Finance Store discusses things and places to consider when thinking about outsourcing small business tasks.

While hiring within the United States is often the simplest thing to ? and is still economically feasible for most established companies ? companies that are trying to break into the market often need a little cost-effectiveness edge to help them maximize their limited resources. However, the process has a few difficulties that need to be considered before outsourcing work. Read more about outsourcing for small business at The Business Finance Store Blog.

Greek euro exit would be a recipe for hardship

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? As Greece creaks under its untenable debt and a shrinking economy, the possibility that it could stop using the euro is becoming increasingly likely. The effects of such a move would be as quick as they would be brutal for ordinary Greeks, who would essentially take a 50-percent pay cut just as prices soar.

Here's a look at what else could happen:

THE RETURN OF THE DRACHMA

No other country has ever left the 17-country eurozone before and there are no procedures in the EU's vast rulebook that would push any country out. But one fear is that the Greeks could decide to vote in an anti-austerity government on June 17 that may then decide to renege on the terms of the multi-billion-euro bailout which has been keeping the country afloat. Greece could be then forced into a messy exit from the euro bloc. It would then have no choice but to start printing its own currency ? the drachma ? to pay its way.

According to the Greek think tank Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), such a move would hit the Greek people hard ? and quickly. The new drachma would lose half or more of its value relative to the euro. This would drive up inflation and sap the purchasing power of the average Greek. At the same time, the country's economic output would drop, putting more people out of work where one in five is already unemployed. The prices of imported goods would skyrocket, putting them out of reach for many.

THE DASH FOR CASH

The prospect of Greece leaving the euro and dealing with a devalued drachma has already prompted many people to start withdrawing their euros out of the country's banks.

"Fear has gripped many who are withdrawing their money," said IOBE head of research Aggelos Tsakanikas.

Although the latest bank deposit figures aren't yet available, Greek President Karolos Papoulias last week said about ?700 million ($898 million) in deposits was taken out of banks the week after the May 6 election. What's more, according to central bank data, Greek banks have been hemorrhaging money for almost three years now ? from a high of ?237.8 billion ($302.5 billion) worth of deposits in Sept. 2009 down to ?165.3 billion ($210.3 billion) in March this year.

A victory for anti-bailout lawmakers in the June 17 election would likely trigger an even bigger bank run, said Dimitris Mardas, associate professor of economics at the University of Thessaloniki. Greek authorities, Mardas predicts, would respond by imposing controls on the movement of money for as long as it takes for the panic to subside.

WHAT ABOUT HOMES AND SAVINGS?

As the new drachma quickly loses its value against other currencies, ordinary Greeks' savings and pensions will shrink just as rapidly. Analyst Vangelis Agapitos estimates that inflation under the new drachma would quickly reach 40 to 50 percent to catch up with the fall in the new currency's value. This would make everything much more expensive.

"People are going to need five times the amount of money they would have needed to purchase something," Agapitos said.

To stop the falling value of the drachma, interest rates would have to be increased to as high as 30 to 40 percent, according to Agapitos. People will then be unable to pay off their loans and mortgages and the country's banks would have to be nationalized to stop them from going under, he predicts.

FEW BENEFITS FOR BUSINESS

Some Greeks believe quitting the euro would boost the country's economy as a devalued drachma would make Greek exports cheaper.

But Constantine Michalos, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says Greece doesn't have a strong enough export-oriented economy to take advantage of a devalued currency. The country currently imports twice as much as it exports.

"Without any real heavy industry, the Greek economy can't exploit this advantage," Michalos said. "Our main industry is tourism, but in a chaotic situation, which tourist would choose to come to Greece right after the country goes back to the drachma?"

To get its international bailouts, Greece had to embark on a series of economic and market reforms such as reducing a bloated public sector and cutting red tape. Agapitos warns that if Greece dumps the euro, the incentive to carry out these reforms would evaporate, hurting Greece's competitiveness.

GETTING IT ON THE BLACK MARKET

A drachma that is dwindling in value means that even basic, foreign-produced goods such as medicines or fuel will cost much more. Almost inevitably, a thriving black market would emerge, taking more steam out of the economy just as bank loans become much more difficult to pay off.

Vangelis, a 58-year-old former customs official who didn't want to give his full name, worried that going back to the drachma would return Greece to the abject poverty of 1940s when it was under Nazi occupation.

"We'll be paying half our salary for a can of olive oil ... Greeks can't be thinking about returning to the drachma. It would be a catastrophe, a catastrophe," Vangelis said.

TURNING TO A LIFE OF CRIME?

With all the pain a drachma-based economy would induce, IOBE head of research Aggelos Tsakanikas foresees an increase in crime as people struggle to pay bills. "We won't see tanks in the streets and violence, we won't see people starving in the streets, but crime could very well rise," he said.

Others reject the apocalyptic scenarios altogether, saying Greeks will fall back on their resourcefulness to overcome hard times and lend a hand to those less well off.

"The way things are now, it can't get any worse," says Athens resident Tasos Schinas, 37. "Sure, the transition to the drachma will be difficult (but) average people will find a way to survive, many will probably go back to the village and start growing produce ... We just won't go back to the lifestyle we've led all this time."

Agapitos, the analyst, thinks that attitude is too cavalier.

"Desperate people do desperate things, but I can't predict what will happen," he said. "There will be rage and people will want to vent it but it may not be done in a civilized way."

Romney, Obama compete for veteran vote, Florida emerging as battleground

The effort to win the votes of military veterans in the presidential election takes the spotlight Memorial Day weekend, with President Obama and Mitt Romney each attending public events and arguing each has a better plan to improve veterans' weak unemployment situation and other issues.

Romney is scheduled to appear Monday with Arizona GOP Sen. John McCain at a Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in San Diego, a conservative region and so-called Navy town.

McCain, a decorated Navy officer and Vietnam prisoner, won the veteran vote over Obama as the Republican nominee in the 2008 election.

The GOP has long been considered the party that supports a strong national defense and holds the vote of veteran and active-duty?members. But the percentages are dropping and the vote appears to be up for grabs this year.

President George W. Bush won the veteran vote by 16 percentage points in his 2004 race against Democrat and Vietnam veteran Sen. John Kerry.

McCain won in 2008 against Obama, though only by 10 percent, 54 percent to 45 percent.

A recent Wall Street Journal-NBC poll shows Romney leads Obama by 8 percentage points among military voters. But a Reuters-Ipsos poll shows Obama winning the veterans' vote over Romney by as much as 7 percentage points.

Large pockets of veterans live in such states as Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. But whether they can assemble a big enough voting bloc to help either candidate win or lose a state remains unclear.

The state most likely for this to happen is Florida, a key election state with 1.6 million veterans, Martin Lee, spokesman for Vets for Romney, said Saturday.

"If we can motivate veterans to go to the polls, with elections so close now, the difference of 100,000 votes could change the election," Lee, a Navy veteran, said.

While jobs and the economy are likely to remain the major topics of the general election, veterans' affairs, including high unemployment, will be a factor, especially since their votes could influence the tight race.

A recent Bureau of Labor Statistic report shows unemployment for U.S. Armed Forces veterans who served on active duty September 2001 was 12.1 percent. The jobless rate for all veterans was 8.3 percent, about the same as the national average, according to the agency's March 20 report.

President Obama has recently seized on the opportunity to win votes from the estimated 22 million veterans, re-launching his Veterans and Military Families for Obama campaign.

"There is nothing I take more serious than my responsibility to those who have risked their own safety to defend ours," the president said in a video he released earlier this month with first lady Michelle Obama. "That's why Michelle and I have made supporting veterans and military families a top priority from the start."

The president also touted the capture of Usama bin Laden under his leadership, the withdraw of troops in Iraq and plans to provide tax credits to businesses that hire veterans.

On Saturday, the president said in his weekly radio address that the county has to serve veterans "as well as they have served us" in part by making sure they get the healthcare and benefits they need.

Obama is scheduled to visit the Arlington National Cemetery and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Monday.?

Still, at least one veteran's organization thinks he could do more. The Rolling Thunder group that represents the plight of U.S. war prisoners said members were supposed to talk with the president Friday at the White House, as part of their annual Memorial Day rally in Washington. However, members got little more than a photo op.

"We thought we were going to meet with the president," Nancy Regg, the group spokeswoman told FoxNews.com "We were disappointed."

Former Army Sgt. Artie Muller, ?the group's executive director, recalled how the group rumbled right up to the White House doors to meet with George W. Bush when he was president, then suggested those days appear long gone.

He said Romney turned down a request to meet the group in Washington and that he is not sure who, if either of the candidates, will get the Rolling Thunder endorsement.

"They have plenty of money to fight wars," he said. "But when it's over, to heck with veterans."

Romney had no public appearances on his schedule Saturday, and the president began a round of golf at about 1:30 p.m.

Romney, who has his own Romney for Veterans campaign, has argued since the start of the campaign that his business experience make him a better candidate to help all Americans find a job.

Romney has criticized the president's call for billions in cuts from the defense budget, while accusing him of negotiating with the Taliban. He also slammed him for apologizing in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world.
